Report: Dolan considers buying out Brown's contract
    ESPN.com news services

Larry Brown's dream job with the New York Knicks could end after only one season.

Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan, who's upset over Brown's record and the coach's public criticism of his players, is considering buying out the final four years of the coach's contract, the New York Daily News reported in Sunday's editions.

The buyout is worth at least $40 million, the newspaper reported.

    The Knicks declined to comment.

One published report indicated Knicks president Isiah Thomas was in line to replace Brown as head coach, the newspaper said, but the team would not confirm nor deny it.

Brown, who led the Knicks to a 23-59 season, has indicated that he will not resign. But the club could avoid having to pay another coach upward of $5 million a year if Thomas takes the job, the Daily News reported. One source told the newspaper that Thomas -- who coached the Pacers from 2000-2003 -- would be amenable to coaching the Knicks.

In April, one day after the Knicks completed one of the worst seasons in franchise history, Thomas said the Hall of Fame coach would return to coach the team for a second season. The underachieving roster was another story.

"I am loyal to winning and I am not loyal to any singular individual," Thomas said then. "I'm going to do what I need to do to make our team better. ...

"When you won 23 games, I think we'll make some changes," he said. "Coach and I haven't sat down and fully decided what changes we'll make, but we'll probably make some changes."

Holy Sh*t. Only the Knicks would pay someone $40 million bucks to go away. And wouldn't that mean that Brown would have made upwards of $50 million for that one year. Damn.

Who couldn't see this coming, he's already getting paid a $5M buyout from the Pistons and now he's going to get $40M from the Knicks. The way he coached the Knicks this year, you would have thought it was by design that he was looking for a buyout. He never settled on a lineup, he totally lost control of the team which is odd for a coach with so much experience and he feuded with his star player in the press.

Dolan and Zeke are idiots and deserve to get reamed for the $50M.

Dead on post. Maybe the most incompetent owner/GM pairing in recent memory. Even though Zeke and LB said LB was coming back, there is NO way he can. I've been waiting for this. As my signature used to say, LB is the most insecure psycho in the NBA by a mile.

This is only a guess, but look for the Maloofs to place Brown as their top choice for Adelman's replacement. With all of Larry's faults, he does stress defense. Larry Brown is Sac-town makes sense why the Maloofs fired Adelman.

Wasn't Adelman not re-signed, rather than fired?

Just when you think things couldn't get any better, Isiah is going to coach the Knicks (alleged).

Isiah has Doolan's ear says the ABC basketball team, (wilbon, jackson, and patricK) and are reporting that Zeke wants the job.

Zeke must have naked photos of Dolan or something. I would have NEVER expected Brown to go before him.

Man, the Knicks organization is like the perfect storm of sheer embarrassment, craptacular play, and complete and utter incompetence.

WHO'S THE OWNER OF THE KNICKS AGAIN? BECAUSE I AM SURE HE NEEDS TO BE BANED FROM OWNING A TEAM IN THE NBA.

Zeke wants the coaching job. Dolan doesn't want to lock in another guaranteed coaching contract. Case closed. Zeke will become the coach and be fired within 1 or 2 years.

I know nothing about Dolan. Somebody have a bio on him? How did he get rich enough to buy MSG while being so stupid at the same time?

maybe it's the fajitas i had earlier tonight, but brown getting an enormous buyout for doing a crappy job makes me want to vomit.

he stabs his old team in the back, and gets paid many millions of dollars just to go away, then inconceivably*, in spite of advancing age and declining health, not only gets a $10M/yr contract but gets it for 5 freakin' years even though it seems unlikely he would finish it.

then, as a reward for overseeing an unmitigated disaster of a season, they might pay him the entire friggin' contract as a buyout (wtf, shouldn't the buyout be for less than the rest of the contract is worth?), giving him 50 million dollars for doing worse than you could almost possibly do. so 10+ million to leave the pistons and 50 to get away from the knicks. 60 million dollars for being an ******* and being terrible at your job. sing me up for that. how do you even take the money if you're him? i mean i guess he's not exactly the type to think he doesn't deserve it so he'll have no problems.

it's not even my money and it makes me sick. granted, dolan and thomas are idiots, but couldn't we just take $50 million of their money and burn it or something instead of letting larry brown have it.

on the plus side, thomas taking over as head coach is almost too good to be true. after doing everything in his power to ruin the team from the GM position, they're going to give him complete control i guess to see if he can really **** it up. it's almost so ridiculous that it has to be true. he's been such a great success at everything else why would you not want him coaching your team? i'm looking forward to the first bill simmons article already.

*except when isiah thomas is involved
