The Globe and Mail reports Bryan Colangelo will be leaving the Phoenix Suns and will assume the role of president and general manager of the Toronto Raptors.

"There are some final details to workout with the Suns regarding his situation that's where it right now," an NBA source told The Globe and Mail.

"There will be something more later, but it is not out of the realm of possibility to say he's coming to Toronto."

According to the paper, an official announcement is pending and sources close to both Suns managing partner Robert Sarver and Colangelo indicated to the Globe that the Raptors' courtship of the 40-year-old reigning executive of the year has been successful.
    Related Info

The move comes after the Raptors fired GM Rob Babcock on Jan. 26 after getting off to a 14-29 start. Wayne Embry took the reins as interim GM, dealing centre Aaron Williams to New Orleans for two second-round draft picks and acquiring Antonio Davis in a trade for Jalen Rose.

After meeting with Raptors officials two weeks ago in Toronto, three league sources told the Arizona Republic that Colangelo appeared ready to accept the position as soon as the "final details" were worked out.

That reportedly included salary talks that would more than triple his salary, said to be among the bottom third of NBA general managers at an estimated $1 million.

Suns managing partner Robert Sarver, whose group will complete a purchase of the team in June 2007, met with Colangelo during All-Star weekend in Houston and asked for a decision from him by the end of the month.

Sources in Phoenix told the Globe said that Sarver was expecting the situation to be resolved Monday.

    More to follow.

    Tides turning for Raptors organization?

In my opinion, this is the best move they could have ever dreamed of making around this time of the year (trade deadline).

I heard the TNT crew talking about this last Thursday and Barkley was upset that the Suns were treating Collangelo this way. He said that Steve Kerr was the probable successor. Yes, former spur S. Kerr. I couldn't believe it when he said that. Barkley said he would like to be GM but could never work for Kerr b/c it is a position he wants.

Why would they hire Kerr? Does he have any kind of ties to them?

From what I understand, this is more a signal of internal changes for the Suns. From what I've read, it seems that Sarver has created an almost hostile working environment for Suns employees - he's quickly gaining a rep (fair or not) as a Mr Burns-type boss.

Steve Kerr is a member of the new ownership group that bought the Suns from the Colangelos (Jerry, in particular). The whispers are that Sarver is looking to squeeze the old hires out and put his people in.

Has there ever been such a mediocre player involved in so many trade talks/desires over the years? The guy seems like he's always been on the block but never moved.

He was supposed to be, but he and Sean Elliott seemed to back out or at least roll back to just investors when things went through.

Jerry Colangelo was the owner, and then Bryan Colangelo became a part-owner when Sarver bought the team and became managing partner. I would assume Bryan is still a part-owner, but this lets you know things are not well at all with him and Sarver.

From a competitive standpoint, I like this. The Suns will be a weaker organization. The Colangelos did a great job and the organization, IMO, is more likely to decline than improve.

    Steve Kerr?

I don't understand this fixation with hiring former players (most of them secondary players). It has caught on like wildfire with Mullin, Paxson, Isaiah, and possibly Kerr. I'm probably missing a couple in there too. I just don't get it.

i hope the raptors get a new coach too. the raptors played the mavs on the weekend, got a 20+ point lead in the 3rd, and then the mavs tied it in overtime thanks to some bad calls and proceded to win it in overtime. sam blasts the team on TV.

they're the number 1 team in the west, your guys played them better than everyone would've thought, the refs robbed them, they just got crushed in over time. what does the coach do? beat them up on national tv. way to go jackas*

but he's a part owner. it's like those ceo's who give themselves $1 salaries but hold substantial stock in the company.

Not quite, he makes $1 million now, will make $3 million with Toronto.

Sarver and Kerr are buddies and co-financers for the Suns. He's not hiring him because his credentials are the best out there.

Awesome. Now his first move should be to get rid of that idiot Sam Mitchell. I think the Raps have enough talent to do something with a half-decent coach at the helm.

If you think Cuban is a spoiled brat, you need to check out this Sarver guy. He acts like a kid and is on a huge power trip. His comments last year against the Spurs were hilarious.

Once Nash wears out, it will be interesting to see how they will rebuild around Amare. Colangelo would have done the job, but can the newcomers do the same? I highly doubt it.

Jerry and Brian Colangelo have consistently put good competitive teams on the floor. They gave very little to get Barkley (Hornacek was involved in the deal as I recall). Barkley got them to the finals in '93, then after Barkley choked in '94 and '95, they salvaged his worth and fleeced the Rockets for Robert Horry and Sam Cassell. We enede up with a 35 lb overweight -Clyde Drexler fighting Barkley at camp. Excellent deal makers.

They recovered well after Gugliotta turned into a near max money bust.

They hired Mike Antonini (sp) -then later signed Nash to run his system. They drafted Amare.

    Excellent General managers.

Rockets benefit from this. Nice work Mr. Sarver and thank you very much. Show us how its' done Mr. Kerr.
