Rep. Tom DeLay Won't Seek Re-Election http://apnews.myway.com//article/20060404/D8GOTP5O1.html Apr 3, 10:39 PM (ET) WASHINGTON (AP) - Rep. Tom DeLay will not seek re-election to Congress, a Republican official says. The Texas Republican reportedly will announce his decision to withdraw from the race on Tuesday.
The only thing that would keep this S.O.B. from seeking reelection would be an indictment on charges that come from the Justice Department, in my opinion. He's been spending a fortune fighting Ronnie Earle, with no signs of quitting. This has to be much bigger than that. Someone finally talked, and/or damning evidence was uncovered showing his corruption while in office. I'm delighted. I'm just sorry it didn't happen a long time ago. Keep D&D Civil.
More news. Reportedly, he's not going to simply drop out of the race... he's going to resign. This has national political implications. The Hammer just delivered another blow to the GOP's chances this Fall: April 3, 2006, 10:13PM DeLay reportedly won't seek re-election Associated Press WASHINGTON — Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Texan touched by a lobbying scandal that ensnared some of his former top aides and cost the Republican his leadership post, won't seek re-election to Congress, officials said Monday. They said DeLay also is likely to resign his seat and leave Congress by the end of May. DeLay was expected to disclose his plans Tuesday, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the congressman had not made that announcement. Several officials said DeLay called Texas members of Congress to tell them he is dropping out of his re-election race. "He'll resign,'' a former senior DeLay aide said. Sugar Land Mayor David Wallace has announced he will be running in a special (election? they dropped the word in their rush to get out the story) in May for DeLay's spot. Wallace also confirmed that DeLay is not running. Houston Chronicle reporter Eric Hanson contributed to this report. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/3768622.html Keep D&D Civil.

More news: DeLay to quit re-election battle Embattled Republican to move from Texas to D.C. area By Laylan Copelin AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF Monday, April 03, 2006 Embattled U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay shocked supporters Monday night by announcing that he is retiring from the House that he once ruled with an iron fist rather than face defeat in November. DeLay told the Galveston Daily News and Time magazine that he would withdraw from his re-election bid and move to the Washington D.C. area. The former U.S. House majority leader cited internal polling and not the swirl of criminal indictment and innuendo as his reason for quitting. "It is obvious that this district is very polarized," DeLay was quoted as saying in the Daily News. "It was obvious to me that the 22nd District deserved more than an election that was turning into a referendum on me rather than what was important to the district." Last fall, a Travis County grand jury indicted DeLay and two associates on felony charges of conspiring to launder corporate money into political donations during the 2002 state elections. He also has seen several of his former Washington staffers plead guilty in a separate federal investigation into lobbyist Jack Abramoff's attempts to buy favors. DeLay continued to say he has broken no laws and that he could defeat Democrat Nick Lampson for the 22nd District seat. Yet he said internal polling showed it too close for comfort. After speaking to a conference of the Christian group Vision America, DeLay said he decided he could be more effective working for the conservative agenda outside of public office. "I can continue to be a leader of the conservative cause," he said. "I can do more to grow the Republican majority, rather than spend the next eight months locked down in running a campaign." The congressman, who informed party leaders of his decision late Monday, said his departure from office would depend on the congressional schedule, but he said he expected it would come in late May or mid-June. There was no word Monday night from DeLay's lawyers about whether he expects to continue to fight the criminal charges or pursue a negotiated settlement. Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle reacted to the news reports of DeLay's plans by saying, "This changes nothing." http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/04/4tomdelay.html I still think he's discovered that he's going to get hammered legally. This statement reads like BS to me. Keep D&D Civil.
"I can continue to be a leader of the conservative cause" _____________ Translation I can start making a lot of money to pay the massive legal fees that are just around the corner.
