Their protest was denied....here's the story:

    http://espn.go.com/nba/news/1999/0804/39601.html

This quote struck me as funny:
"While concluding on the basis of the videotape that the game clock did freeze momentarily for three-tenths of a second near the end of overtime, Stern decided that the clock malfunction was inadvertent and did not prejudice the play of the game," the NBA said in statement.

SO, we are admitting the clock froze, and malfunctioned, but since the malfunction was accidental, it is irrelevant? Strange.

See, this is how that "Big market, little market" controversy stays alive. At least have the balls to admit the Grizzlies were wronged!

It doesn't matter whether or not the mistake was intentional, it obviously prejudiced the game because it caused the Grizzlies to lose. If it had not paused, they would have won. If that isn't sufficient influence, I don't know what is.

All the same, I'd have been even more surprised if they did do something about it. You can't take the win away from the Lakers now. You have to go with your officials on the court whether they are right or not.

Really ... the call has been made, let it stand. Before you know it, they will try to make a controversial call about everything. Then you have another Florida issue on your hands ...

That isn't the point...the point is...the clock froze for .3 seconds...shaq got 'fouled' with .1 seconds...So time should have already ran out.

The league needs to start some sort of instant replay.

    Great post Hoop-T!!

Seriously, I think we all knew that they would deny the protest. It's not like the NBA would overturn the outcome of the game and award the Grizz the win.

    Pimp,
Agreed, but that quote by the league is just ludicrous. "Yeah, we know it malfunctioned, but it was an accident....oh well, it didn't affect the game." But the truth of the matter is, it did. I think more or less, I would like the league to own up to a mistake. I never expected them to overturn the outcome of the game.

I am surprised that COACHSAMPSON has not stopped by for this post!!

You know its weird, San Antonio is a small market and they had a bad call that impacted their game against Orlando, which was clearly a bad call, and yet I don't see posts talking about that. I submit that you are letting your dislike for the Lakers cloud your judgement.

I still think they were pressing the wrong point. Watching the replay over and over, it looks to me that contact came when the clock was at 0.0, though the motion towards it started earlier. I'd have argued the foul and the shot were both after the buzzer.

I wonder if anything would have been done if it was the Lakers that lost because of the same type of bad call on the other end.

I do infact hate the Lakers....but I thought this post-worthy regardless, if for no other reason that there are many Laker haters on this board.

I simply did not see the Spurs controversy, but if it were protested, I may have posted a thread about it as well.
