--Explosions in Stockholm: Suicide Bomber Threatened Swedes, "Pig" Mohammad Cartoonist
    Michael C. Moynihan | December 11, 2010

Two explosions rocked the downtown shopping district in Stockholm this evening as holiday shoppers crowded the chainstore-clogged area around Drottninggatan. According to early Swedish media reports, a car parked on the busy shopping street exploded at just after 5PM today, wounding two passersby. Two minutes later, say investigators, a second explosion was heard from a nearby street, where police found a bag stuffed with nails and the body, it appears, of the bomber.

According to this report in the tabloid newspaper Expressen, the Swedish security service and TT newswire (the Swedish equivalent to the AP) received a threat "against the Swedish people" ten minutes before the explosions. In a letter and audiotape, the bomber wrote that "Now your children, daughters, and sisters die like our brothers and sisters die." He continued:

Our actions speak for themselves. As long as you don't stop your war against Islam, and you degrade the Prophet, and your support for that stupid pig [cartoonist Lars] Vilks."

The bomber cited the Swedish military's involvement with NATO in Afghanistan and "threatened" those serving there. According to Expressen, the letter also urges Muslims to fight back against "Islamophobia" in Sweden, presumably by murdering Swedes, and calls on "all mujahadin in Sweden and across Europe" to rise up. As is typical with semi-literate religious fanatics, the attack, it would seem, was a massive failure. The only death was the bomber and, from the photographs floating around in the Swedish press, property damage seems to be minimal.

The Abrahamic religions may have much virtue in them, but so much bad comes out of them in general, that sometimes it's just disheartening to see. This applies to all of them, so basso, if I may bring up more examples...

    National Liberation Front of Tripura

Investigations revealed that the NLFT produced pornographic films of kidnapped tribal men and women at gunpoint in order to finance its activities. NLFT leaders were also accused of sexually abusing female prisoners. The state government reports that the Baptist Church of Tripura supplies arms and gives financial support to the NLFT.

They sound like crazies, too, but is the "National Liberation Front of Tripura" a worldwide phenomenon?

Do people kill in its name in the USA, in Sweden, in the Netherlands, in the United Kingdom, in Spain, in Germany, in Iraq, in Indonesia, in Thailand, in Nigeria, in...?

yes, once again you can cite extreme christianity and mock them as the religion of peace so on, fact is the book and the teachings of the religion strictly forbid being an aggressor or killing an innocent. These guys are hardly religious os righteous in that manner, it is often more of their lingo to use religious talk sort of similar to when we say 'by god is my witness' or those small references when they translate over its supposed to be all about religion, but its more about politics and living in a place of turmoil which will increase tension and any sort of violence/frustration. The roots are different, but then again you have made up your close minded minds, like I've said times before, if you want numbers, you can support catholics to be some sort of child molestors, blacks to not be able to complete hs and stay out of jail, there are numbers to support these ignorant statements, yet maybe the issue isn't their religion or race but something else.

Anyways, another generalization that you guys would probably enjoy and agree with

So you are angry at those who report this and choose to insult them instead of being angry at the person who tried to kill people in the name of islam?

The "National Liberation Front of Tripura" isn't a worldwide phenomenon.

But Christian extremism is. Just under-reported. Which is too bad, because if certain mud-slingers are going after Islam, they should aim to chase the crazies away from Christianity, Islam and Judaism-and hell, any religion or ideology that can incite extremism. We do ourselves a disservice by laughing smugly about the "religion of peace" when the religion the Western world is founded on may just have some of the same inherent weaknesses-especially since both are so closely related.

I agree that they are closely related, and that there are crazies out there from all directions. There is clearly a difference in scale, though. I would agree that the abortion murderers are probably the most similar thing in Christian circles. The "logic" behind murdering someone because one supposedly wants to preserve life is baffling.

Nobody is "laughing smugly", though. It's not a funny matter, especially in Europe, where this kind of thing like in Stockholm - that someone could try to blow you up "in the name of islam" could happen in any major city at any time. You do not have to be an abortion doctor for that.

be careful about arguing scale, I've only begun to scratch the surface.

The LRA is accused of widespread human rights violations, including murder, abduction, mutilation, sexual enslavement of women and children, and forcing children to participate in hostilities.

During an interview with IRIN, Vincent Otti was asked about the LRA's vision of an ideal government, to which he responded

"Lord’s Resistance Army is just the name of the movement, because we are fighting in the name of God. God is the one helping us in the bush. That’s why we created this name, Lord’s Resistance Army. And people always ask us, are we fighting for the [biblical] Ten Commandments of God. That is true – because the Ten Commandments of God is the constitution that God has given to the people of the world. All people. If you go to the constitution, nobody will accept people who steal, nobody could accept to go and take somebody’s wife, nobody could accept to innocently kill, or whatever. The Ten Commandments carries all this."

I appreciate that you take this problem seriously, but you do realize that many (i.e Fox News, conservative pundits and all the Christian fundamentalists out there) are merely sporting this as some sort of trophy in their edge to prove that Islam is inferior to Christianity in some way?

Out of the top 25 terrorist attacks ever ranked by number of deaths, only 6 were not committed by Islamists. I marked the ones in italics which were not committed by Muslims. Again, I don't think that all or even a majority or even more than a small minority of Muslims are bad, but facts are facts - out of the top 25 terrorist attacks, 19 were committed by Muslims, and in many or most of these cases, they (not I) specifically cited their religion or what they perceive it to be as a motivating factor.

I don't watch Fox News and I don't listen to conservative pundits and I don't know any Christian fundamentalists, but hey, the solution is easy - if there weren't people all around the world killing or trying to kill people in the name of islam, these people would have nothing to talk about.

I just noticed that the link I gave does not work anymore. Here is a working link:

    http://www.cedarsrevolution.net/jtphp/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=550&Itemid=2

As to the definition, there are some out there, I did not make the list. You could google it or look it up on Wikipedia, but it seems evident that wars and actions by a state government are not included.

uh, your list is mad biased.->which once again comes back to the whole principle of why people may feel Islam is so dark while Christianity somehow looks like a white knight.

The LRA alone, I just mentioned, committed a massacre of 321 civilians last year.

In 2008, they committed a series of Christmas massacres...

Those two incidents alone would merit spots on your list at the very top.

Of course, I can't speculate as to whether this is being ignored by MSNBC because the LRA is a Christian miltia or because the deaths were the deaths of poor Africans that are worth far less in media figures (tragically)---but the fact remains that extremist Christianity has quite a bit of blood on its' hands as well. The solution lies in examining ALL religions. It is clear extremism is being bred and that religion is a powerful structure for further inciting nationalistic and materialistic passions. We cannot ignore extremist Islam. But in examining the failures of Islam in regards to extremism, we must also look to its' kin.

While I'm here spending so much time making TL:DR posts, might as well put it out there that the reason I know about the LRA is because of a NGO called Invisible Children. So if people are reading this, and are horrified by what's happening, well, there is a way to help-

The list is from 2007. Here is a more current one on Wikipedia.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...iolent_events_by_death_toll#Terrorist_attacks

Again, it is not my aim to say that other religions look like a white knight, but even if you include whatever you have there (I don't know why it is not on the Wikipedia list, again, I did not make that list), the fact still remains that a lot of terror is committed in the name of religions in general, but also in the name of islam in particular.

I agree. I live in Europe. The chances that a Christian extremist blows me up at an airport are about zero. The chance that an Islamic extremist does it is fortunately also low, but much higher. So that might influence my perception.

Thank you for the link. I did not know about this conflict. I read the "history of the war" section and it sounds terrible. I tend to avoid reading about Africa's struggles because it just drives me insane. But your point that there is more injustice and madness in the world than just from islamists is something that I am aware of and is taken.

    awesome. props to you

I'd drag out more, but I think we're at a point of agreement, since I have always agreed with your point that radical Islam is a terrible problem. I hate repression. I love beautiful women. I could care less if someone is gay. I hope you can begin to guess my opinion of Sharia and repressive Islamic regimes.

But I just really hate this scrutiny of radical Islam by proponents of "Christian fundamentals" and conservative pundits->who seem to be framing it in some "look how f****d Islam is in comparison to our system/culture!" while ignoring the attacks inspired by their banner and the fact that the system they and we live under can easily fall to the same corruption if we are not so careful. kinda annoying watching a crusade that doesn't go into the fundamental problem of how religion can be corrupted and instead devolves into "my religion is better then yours"

long as we keep some perspective on the whole issue-radical religions of all kind are terrible-then all is good.
