I know that's kind of a narrow search field, but I'm fighting a losing battle trying to clean up my mother-in-law's computer, and I know you have to take everything you read about these suckers on the internet with a grain of salt, so I'm going to poll the teeming masses. What's a good pop-up blocker that's not a part of a browser (a la Google Toolbar). I've run SpyBot and Adaware, cleaned out the registry, and uninstalled all the obvious spy/ad programs, but I've still got explorer windows popping up all over the place, even though I'm using firefox. Any ideas?
The one from Panicware works pretty well on my PC, and I didn't have to install anything else (toolbars, etc.).
Are you sure they were uninstalled properly? Many of those programs aren't completely removed through Add/Remove Programs, nor by simply deleting their directory. Do some searches for the removal procedures for the different spyware apps you had. Hijack This is a good one that recently helped me after my browser was hijacked and about 6 different spyware/adware programs were installed. I still had to delete a couple of folders in Program Files, but running Hijack This followed by Spybot then Adaware cleaned everything up.
