And now it looks like he has really gone out and done something amazing Reighn over Me: http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/reignoverme/high.html Jim Carey Robin Williams Two slapstick actors who when they put in effort can REALLY do some amazing things. They get lazy every now and then and make movies like Bruce Almighty or Man of the year. But it's when these guys really apply themselves we get performances that other actors just can't give. No one has been more disappointing than Adam Sandler. The guy has so much talent but from Big Daddy on, he's just phoned it in. It's just Adam being Adam on screen. 50 first dates, Big Daddy, Mr. Deeds, Anger Management. It's all the same guy. He put in some effort for Punch Drunk Love and the results weren't as great as we hoped but it still showed a slice of Brilliance. And now it looks like he has really gone out and done something amazing Reighn over Me: http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/reignoverme/high.html Check it out. It looks really good. The first movie that involves 9/11 that isn't completely exploitive. I can only hope this is the beginning of a new respectable career for Adam Sandler.
I really wouldn't say United 93 or WTC were exploitive as they were pretty respectful films...but I like the approach Reign Over Me takes in that it focuses on the emotional aftermath of the attack instead of the attack itself. And Don Cheadle is in it as well.
I disagree with this. 'Click' came out last year and that was an amazing movie. Terrific performance and an overall great movie.
Look at the types of performance Robin Williams did with What Dreams May Come, Good Will Hunting, Insomniac. Jim Carrey in 23 Eternal Sunshine. These are really unique and challenging roles. It's nice these comedic actors really take risks like that. And I think the other two 9/11 movies are exploitative. That doesn't make them bad movies but they rely on mostly on the sympathy toward the most explicit of stories. Much in the same way movies like I am Sam are exploitative toward the mentally handicapped.
Adam's one of my favorite actors along with DiCaprio, Carrey, and Tom Cruise. Why is it that when these comedy actors do these serious movies, their performances move me moreso than the serious actors in serious movies? Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine, Stranger than Fiction, Click were all great movies.
Reign Over Me - I think Punch Drunk Love and Spanglish were both great performances, and different from his everyday mold
ACtually in Punch Drunk Love he was better than Robin Williams 95% of the time when Williams over acts his way through dramatic pictures. (How did he make through Juliard?) He was also better than Jim Carey. Spanglish was one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life, and Sandler was pretty bad in it.
Hmmmmm I haven't seen Punch Drunk Love.. from the previews it looks very very weird. Seeing I liked those movies I listed, will I enjoy this movie?
I really enjoyed both those films- Adam Sandler is not afraid to expirement. I thought the Longest Yard and Deeds were very well done.
Nothing will top Billy Madison. Ever. I never liked Robin Williams in any movie other than Patch Adams and Mrs.Doubtfire. Jim Carrey became my favorite actor after watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which happens to also be my favorite movie.
its a chick flick for guys who want to beat drums and sip cinammon tea. yeah, real entertaining half the audience will go in expecting some crazy stuff, and come out swearing that Adam Sandler has completely lost his mind.
United 93 was not an exploitative film - in fact, I would argue that it deserved the Best Picture Oscar (it didn't even get nominated) far more than The Departed. I began watching it with a great deal of cynicism and was completely bowled over by how good it was. I really liked Punch Drunk Love, but the genius of that film was taking Adam Sandler's onscreen persona (awkward, temper-tantrum-throwing manchild) and putting it in real life (rather than suspending all reality). Sandler acted exactly the same as he does elsewhere, but the characters around him were realistic for once (Emily Watson, on the other hand, was great, but she always is).
