We've all heard the announcers and espn reporters say that no 7-6 center is going to get a charge call against a guard but i hardly see a difference between yao and big Ben Wallace. They gave him the call vs Brent Barry in the 1st quarter of game 7.

Wallace had really good timing but in all those fouls they call against yao at least one had to of had a set yao.

Would yao have gotten a different call?

Yup, this last season he would have. Let's hope it's a different 2005-06.

I see a big difference between 7-6 and 6-9 but I don't think that has anything to do with the call.

Yao has gotten the call before and I'm sure he will still get the call later.

Lets just hope he doesn't try to rely on getting the call.

Yao should be trying to block shots, not draw charges...

    exactly.

take a step to the side, wait for the ball to be in the air and then block it.

yao stands in front of the man hoping to get the charge, then he tries to block the shot before it's in the air.

The point is that Ben Wallace, the blocks per game leader in several recent seasons and a big, tough guy, takes charges and gets the call all the time. Yao, only because he is taller (not a better shot-blocker) just stopped getting that call when it counted in the playoffs. Media pundits say that he should not be taking charges, but Barkley came out and said that all those plays were legitimate charges taken by Yao. It is height discrimination, nothing more. I agree that Yao should not rely on the charge, but there are some situations where a guy is barrelling toward him so hard that everyone in the arena knows that they are going to call a foul on Yao if he trys to block it. In that case, it is smarter to take the charge, and that is what he learned in earlier seasons. If the refs gave Yao more leniency and maybe stopped bailing out the offensive player every time they jump into Yao, then maybe he would have a mentality that he can close down the paint without fear of the ticky-tack BS calls.

Another example of the double standard is the moving screen calls. How come our series was the only series where they just randomly decided to call all kinds of moving screens in the fourth quarters of our games? In the finals you had to set a screen, move, and then hit the defender over the head with a hammer to get called for it.

let us not forget, that I believe calls are made based on an earned respect level. Ben Wallace is known as a great defensive player (they kept alluding to it last night). So he'll most likely get more calls or non-calls favoring him on the defensive end. The concensus on Yao is he's less agile and quick (due to his size), therefore the ref probably thinks, "man, you too slow yao, foul."

    I dunno, just a thought.

What I don't get is that Duncan puts his shoulder down every time he drives but Yao isn't allowed to.

He gets called for fouls that way too. Him and JVG have tried a number of different tactics and haven't found one that doesn't get him in foul trouble.
