all fair but i was cringing watching him stand in the corner on a couple occasions. anyone can do that. he's obviously a good enough shooter to be effective that way but it's his playmaking skills that will determine how good he ulitimately becomes.
Yeah I just have a tough time blaming him for this, though. You can't just run around randomly off ball, it has to be based on an offensive system, which summer league teams just don't have. Also most guys in summer league are fighting for their careers and aren't really going to be looking to pass. I think we'll have a better idea of his off-ball ability when he gets to the NBA.
again, all fair. i guess i'm not being clear enough. i am completely shocked at how good he looks on ball. giant grain of salt as this is against SL scrubs, but we may have an all-star PG
I would say if there's one part of his game you don't need to worry about, it's his off-ball play. That was mostly his role at Kentucky. In fact when I first saw his highlights after the lottery and people pegging him to the Rockets, my thought was that he's basically JJ Redick.
Yeah, the worry wasn't whether he could play off ball. The worry was whether he could play PG because he didn't have much of a chance to show his ball handling and playmaking skills in college. His summer league performance has alleviated a lot of that worry.
That was a head scratcher. I really don’t know why they drafted him. I think he will make it in the NBA. I voted for him as my pick, but want to change it closer to the draft. BTG of all people convinced me that Sheppard was the better pick. I really think the Spurs should have picked Clingan or Eden at that spot. Really weird trade.
I could see why they'd pass on him, but picking him just to trade him was weird. I'm interested to see how his 3 point shooting translates, that'll determine his ceiling IMO
I don't think that Sheppard is going to be able to stay in front of Dillingham at the point of attack - so this will be a real opportunity to see how Sheppard and the Rockets approach it.
From what I’ve seen at all levels, Reed is very comfortable against <6’3 guards on both ends. He’ll get beat off the dribble frequently by Rob I’m sure, but against smaller guards his recovery contests and close outs are really really effective. He terrorized smaller guards in the SEC. It’s bigger, rangier dribble attackers who give him major problems. They beat him at the POA and just forget about him because he can’t bother their shot / finish. And on the other end I anticipate Reed getting a lot of shots up via PnR because Dillingham can’t navigate a screen to save his life. That’s unless Minnesota plays hyper aggressive PnR defense like Detroit did, which is a real possibility.
And we won't be seeing his full potential til maybe year 3. Reed is going to be one of those guys that everyone is REALLY going to want to see shine bright quickly. If he struggles there are going to be some really pissed off fans.
