The crossover and splash, the hesi with the floater, the long bombs without hesitation, the passing. . . Boys, I think we got the next Stockton / Nash afterall.
Shouldn't get overhyped by summer league. He'll have a lot of growing pains adapting to NBA size and speed. I always loved the pick and think he'll be sensational. However, there were a ton of people who assumed he was just some stiff that could make an open shot and not much else (mostly because of his appearance). It was always an absurd observation to anybody that actually watched him play.
Reed is going to get so many open 3's with the gravity of Sengun's game. Really is the perfect player.
Yall can play the cautiously optimistic game. Im all in because... Why not... Amyways, here's a decent video with some good breakdowns of some of his plays Some of those wont make the highlight reel because he didnt get a stat, but he put a lot on display. Im not sure why his handles and physical ability get underrated. Even his passing has been doubted. Hes really quick and has a lot of pop to the way he moves on offense and defense. But its cool. People will realize we got a blue chip prospect soon enough.
I love Reed as a complimentary player to Sengun (and Cam) right now. He looked as good tonight as I could have hoped! Let's hit some open threes!
Reed looked good - no doubt he will be a wonderful rotation player here at least. That gravity is the thing that can make him special. There was a little Steph Curry thing he had going where just the treat of his shot was enough to make guys run out extra hard and give him easy paths to the lane and he made great reads from that. I suspect this will be the way he will play through summer league - curious to see how the regular season looks for him. If he and Bari can play a two man game you have to step out on well past the 3pt line - it’s going to be tough to guard Houston with guys like Cam, Amen, and Jalen being so quick on the perimeter and requiring help. Defenses will be stretched too thin similar to Golden State’s early years.
It is going to be a joy reading all these pages from this game. Just got done watching it. Can't take anything out of a summer league game but you cannot deny that shooting touch and what looks to be a high IQ player. Defense needs work but looked to get better the longer the game actually went on, his positives are going to outweigh that negative - if it remains to be a negative - though. Sengun must be salivating at the thought of making a few passes a game out of a triple team into the hands of this sniper, instead of Jalen Green.
Dang. Daddy isn't going to like that photo. Expecting a few of those media members will lose their credentials come tomorrow.
Bite your tongue, Jalen has plenty of time left before he's traded to impart his shooting touch on Reed.
It was great to actually see him play in person. His mid range game looks like it will be deadly paired with his long range accuracy. I know it’s one summer league game but the tools he showed are really exciting to see. He played with a lot of poise and IQ once he relaxed a bit. He definitely looks like a future starting point guard. I’m all in on Reed.
I’m interested to see if RS can help Cam slow things down and get to his spots in the half court. Sheppard proved that he can create his own shot, navigate screens, and make simple plays. But can he get guys organized and help Cam and AJ unlock their game? That’s a lot to ask a 20-year old but RS has that “it” quality that you don’t see every day. The coaches should also draw up some staggered screens to let teams chase Sheppard too.
Reed needs to tighten his handle a bit. Funny thing is, when he’s attacking he’s fine but when he’s letting things develop in front of him his handle gets bothered. Kind of nitpicking but Reed played well
Nice first showing. Pick is looking good. The 3PT shot is so impressive. He’s a great team player as projected. If I had to pick at something, he did pick up his dribble a couple of times and his handle was a bit loose. He turned it over a few times (might be because team is new). Just things that require polish, adding good habits and removing bad habits. Can’t tell much from one game but it was a great first game regardless.
The best part about Reed's game is his BBIQ. Also, his mom telling Ime and Stone multiple times that their family motto is basically "don't be soft". You love to see that and I think that mentality fits perfectly on our team. Reed really brings everything we need to the table, shooting, spacing, disruptive defense (reminds me a lot of CP3 and FVV), playmaking and doesn't play selfish.
Put this in the other thread. Summer league "doesn't really matter" and it's hard to judge players in the summer league. We've all seen players like Donte Green and John Lucas III dominate SL, but didn't amount to much in the NBA. However, I've already seen enough to say Reed Sheppard has one of the highest ceilings in this draft and can be the best player in this draft. He can be a star. At minimum he showed the ability to play PG in the NBA, but this may take some time. He almost always makes the right play and is a winning player. Yes, he needs to work parts of his defense, especially moving laterally, but it's hard not to get excited about him. Here is a small summary of what happened in ONE GAME. Offense -Displayed elite shooting as expected -Played with great poise and always made the right play. Methodical -Showed PG ability and dribble penetration. Always looked up when dribbling. -Showed above average vision with multiple difficult passes that he made look easy. -Displayed ability to break down defenders multiple times with simple hesitation or cross-over -Displayed ability to get shot off by quick moves, using screens, and having a quick release -He already has a good midrange and floater game -Elite IQ on offense Defense -Displayed elite IQ on defense -Made quick reads and switched well for most plays -3 BLKS, 1 STL, and multiple deflections by having quick hands and great anticipation -Went straight up multiple times to contest shots resulting in missed FGs -Plus point of attack defender on most possessions -He did get blown by a few times. However, several were either on fast break disadvantage situations or defensive set breakdowns. -Defense will get better with experience and scouting
