Black SUV dumped and ran over body

MESA, Ariz. -- Cincinnati Reds outfielder Dernell Stenson was shot and then dumped from a vehicle early Wednesday morning in a Phoenix suburb. Chandler police are treating his death as a homicide.

Stenson, who played in 37 games for the Reds this season, was in Arizona where he played with the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League. He was hitting .394, third-best in the league, for 18 games.

Residents told police they heard shots fired and saw the man (Stenson) thrown off a black vehicle, variously reported as a pickup truck and an SUV, in the early morning hours Wednesday. It appeared he had been shot and run over by the vehicle. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle leaving the area.

About 3:45 a.m., Mesa police found a vehicle matching the description -- it was registered to Stenson.

The vehicle was impounded, and the man found driving it is being held by Chandler police, but no charges have been filed.

Chandler police are investigating the shooting deaths of Stenson and another man, which occurred within two days of each other and about a mile apart, according to The East Valley Tribune.
Reds' OF Stenson wasn't the only man shot in Chandler this week.
Police do not have any evidence that would link the two deaths, stated Chandler police detective Emma Bribiescas.

"We extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to Dernell's family and his friends, teammates and coaches," Reds spokesman Rob Butcher said Wednesday.

Arizona Fall League officials canceled Wednesday and Thursday's games in the wake of the incident. The league is designed to help develop some of baseball's top prospects.

"This is really awful," said Davona Vojovich, a friend of Stenson's who was outside Scottsdale Stadium when she was told of the incident, "I can't believe this happened." The other death was discovered earlier, about 7:40 p.m. Monday, when another set of Chandler residents found the body of a man slumped over the driver's seat of a 1996 Buick, Bribiescas said. The 23-year-old man had died of a gunshot wound.

In his major league debut this season Stenson, of LaGrange, Ga., hit .247 with three home runs and 13 RBIs in 37 games with Reds. He was a third-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox in 1996. He was claimed off waivers by Cincinnati on March 1.

Stenson moved up through the minors this year, hitting .306 with 14 homers and 76 RBIs in 101 games at Double-A Chattanooga and batting .237 with five homers and 14 RBIs in 17 games at Triple-A Louisville.

On Aug. 13, Stenson was called up by the Reds. Three days later, he doubled twice and singled against Houston in his first big league start.

On the next-to-last day of the season, Stenson made three outstanding catches in left field to preserve a win over Montreal. On the final day, he homered in a 2-1 loss to the Expos.

It's not what you know, it's who you know. But for basketball players they should read this the other way around. :(

RIP Dernell Stenson, you will be missed. Hopefully they find his killers and they have a date with some of Dr. Kevorkian's Love Potion Number 9.

    Dangerous suspect sought by police

    ESPN.com news services
CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Reds outfielder Dernell Stenson was shot execution-style, with his hands and feet bound, sources familar to the police investigation told the East Valley (Ariz.) Tribune Friday.

Stenson's hands were bound with plastic handcuffs and his feet were tied together with shoelaces, sources told the newspaper.

Stenson, who had been playing in the Arizona Fall League, was found dead Wednesday in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler. He had been shot and run over and apparently dragged by his own SUV.

Reginald Riddle of Harvey, Ill., was arrested for investigation of first-degree murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and burglary but hadn't formally been charged Friday. According to court records, Riddle admitted in an interview with police that he was involved in the death of Stenson.

Several hours after Stenson's body was found, Riddle's half brother, Kevin Riddle, 43, was stopped by police while driving Stenson's SUV, police said.

Authorities were still looking for another man identified as a suspect in the case, 20-year-old transient David Griffith, said Chandler police Sgt. Mark Franzen. Police consider Griffith armed and dangerous. According to the Arizona Department if Corrections, Griffith was released from prison 10 months ago after serving nearly two years for car theft.

Reginald Riddle is being held on $500,000 cash bail and could face homicide, armed robbery and kidnapping charges, according to court documents obtained by the Tribune.

The Riddles recently arrived in the Valley after driving cross country from Illinois, police told the paper. According to court documents obtained by the paper, Mesa police spotted Kevin Riddle about two hours after the killing as he was leaving an apartment complex. Kevin Riddle told police he found the SUV, keys in the ignition, in the complex parking lot.

Police still have no motive for the killing.

    One question:
How is a grown man, facing death restrained by a pair of plastic handcuffs?

You have no idea how strong plastic can be. Many plastics can be stronger than steel. We're not talking about plastic bags.

Thanks for clearing that up. I just ahd an image of the plastic kid's handcuffs I used to play with. The ones that were all plastic, and you could get out of without the key.
