Dunno what the article says, but weren't people saying that the Cards were going to go after Cabrera?

It would have given me great pleasure to move this badboy out of the Astros forum :D. On topic, it is a blow to the Cards but they will sign someone to fill the hole. I think the bigger problem for them is that they lost both their 2B and SS. This is a team that was so solid defensively last season and now they will be missing 2 key players up the middle. We'll just have to see who they replace them with. As an Astro fan I hope they use Hector Luna and a lower tiered free agent.

Didn't they lose Matheny, too. He was a solid catcher.

Maybe but who is going to pitch for them? Schilling is saying he may not be ready at the start of the season. They lost Pedro, and Derek Lowe. Your looking at a rotation that featuers 41 year old David Wells, Bronson Arroyo, and DeanBcurtis's boy Tim Wakefield. That won't scare too many hitters.

Yes, the Cards are probably going to sign Cabrera. He was waiting to see what Edgar got before really negotiating. And Matheny is now with the Giants who released that great ball of human warmth, A.J. Pierzynski today.

Wow, I am really surprised by this news as this morning the Boston Dirt Dogs and Globe were acting like it was pretty much a done deal that Renteria was going back to St. Louis. I even thought on my way to the other building to get my morning snack, "What will the Red Sox do? Please don't get Julio Lugo, but re-sign Cabrera!" But I am not complaining about this signing.:D

And Castor, you are exactly right about the pitching. Huge hole to fill at the #2 slot plus you have Schilling's slow recovery from surgery.

I am hoping for Theo to get not only Clement but Burnett as well. A rotation of Schilling, Burnett, Wells, Clement, and Wakefield would be nice

True, from what I `ve read Curt should be ready to go by the second month of the season. If D Wells can hold it together he will be a solid addition. I am surprised they gave Wells that much money, but I`ve always been a Wells fans, plus can you imagine how pumped he will be to face the Yankees.

Well ROCKSS from what I understand, Wells' contract has a very low base and is loaded with incentives which pushes it to be like 8M a year or so. So, it was really a pretty savvy contract that Theo came up with.

The Cards are really having a bad offseason so far.

They haven't got any of the big-name pitches that they want and they lost half of their infield.

Somehow I don't feel bad for them at all.

Yes, ESPN said that they let him go so they could afford to keep Renteria. This about 2 days ago when I heard that. Oh well.
    Thanks Boston!:D

I disagree. The guy who runs the Sons of Sam Horn Website said that Renteria was responsible for 42 or so winshares last season. Is he probably overpaid? Yea, but that is the way it is when you sign above-average guys in FA. He is just as good or better than OCab in every way imaginable.

Now they just need to resolve the Varitek situation, sign Clement/Perez and/or trade for Burnett. Hold onto Hanley Ramirez and try to use him for bait for the trading deadline of 2005 and get someone like a Sheets, Beckett, or Oswalt. Have faith in Theo, yipeng! Considering his track record so far, I am willing to give Epstein several (and I mean several) mulligans before I start criticizing any of his moves.

C'mon Manny, show you're enthusiasm. Renteria is twice the player, hell three times the player that Cabrera is. Nice upgrade.

Don't start having fantasies about a championship repeat however, because The Boss isn't sitting by idly waiting for something to happen. The Randy Johnson rumors are still swirling(not holding my breath), they have spoken to Carlos Beltran's agent and are set to sign Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright any day now.

I'm already looking forward to all 19 meetings next season between our beloved squads.

What makes you think the Red Sox have any chance of getting Oswalt?

Well, I am going on what I read last night on the SoSH website. Yea, it is wishful thinking but if the Stros resign Beltran and have some other big contracts, they might think that Oswalt will want too much to stay (sorta like Nomar did). Instead of just letting him walk without getting anything in return, why not try to get a topnotch prospect like Hanley Ramirez?

Personally, I would rather see the Sox deal HRam for Hudson. If we got him, I would probably be happier than I was after Edgar (ironically enough) grounded out to Foulkie.

    Pimp:

Oh I am excited about Renteria - no question about that. But I guess I am a little disappointed that Varitek is still unsigned (thanks Scott Boras) and that Matt Clement and Odalis Perez are the cream of the crop of the FA SPs that are left.

The Astros would let Berkman walk before not doing everything to re-sign Oswalt.

That being said, they won't let either of them go.... there'll be plenty of money to go around, once Bagwell's contract vanishes.
