According to this Yahoo story, professional athletes can concentrate with concentrate with constant noise, but not a sudden change in volume. Can we get the Red Rowdies to be loud as hell then go quiet, as soon as free throw is released as suggested in the article.

It could increase our homecourt advantage.

Are there rules on what they can and can't do set by the officials?

Haha, there might be. But try telling the Red Rowdies that. I'd love to see them try.

IIRC, Cuban once tried to mess up FTs by having fans wave their sticks in a slanted fashion. I don't think there's any rules that prevent indirect interference.

From a practical standpoint, it's just impossible to coordinate 16000+ fans. Otherwise, I'm sure there are plenty of noises the stadium can make which throws opposing players off.

But they don't have too coordinate 16000+ fans in Houston. The lower bowl seats are empty or have fans that don't make nearly as much noise as the Red Rowdies section. Many other fans follow the Rowdies lead in cheers, also.

also I read something like moving one step to the right or left all at the same time just before the ball is released

it's probably easier to make them silent and them scream their head off just before release, rather than quiet down before release

On a tangent, anybody remember those hypnotic swirling signs that fans used to have to distract free throw shooters? Those got banned, right?

They already do this sort of thing during the home games, just not during FTs. Clutch will act like a cunductor, and the rowdies will scream their heads off when he puts his hands in the air, then go silent when he puts them down. They just need to start doing this while the opponents are at the stripe.

Rice basketball fans already try to do this... there's just too few of them to make it effective.

If we got Clutch to do this during free throws, we are set. If Stern didn't complain about the mav fans leaning one way, then we should be able to get away with it.

Any non-malicious Edge on Homecourt is worth exploring considering that 1 Point can be the difference between Winning and Losing
