The greatest coach of all time. Riley and Jackson together barely have as many championships. To me, death brings a time to celebrate life. Nothing sad here, just the end to a great story.
I was just reading the book he co-authored with John Feinstein, "Let Me Tell You A Story", and it was AMAZING the impact he had on so many people. It seems he lightened up the room to no end, and was such a fascinating figure. It's so sad to hear this.
RIP Red. Phil will never have anything on you. Rockets111, you're gonna have to edit your sig. It's way too big.
I am really shocked with this news.. what's ironic is that I heard that Boston Celtics didn't have cheerleaders for that past 40 years because of him.. this year, they are forming a dance team.. I was surprised because I remember hearing that Auerbach told the Celtics to never have dancers..now he dies ..!!
BOSTON. May 12, 2006, is a day which will live in infamy in the history of the Boston Celtics. On that rainy Friday, the team announced that it had ended its holdout and would join the rest of the NBA in the twenty-first--actually, make that the twentieth--century, and hire dancing girls to entertain fans. Red Auerbach, who coached the team to eight straight championships between 1959 and 1966 and nine overall, was the last obstacle to the team's decision to abandon its Puritanical attitude towards bare midriffs and shaking bootys on the parquet floor. "I've always been against it," he said, "and I'm still against it." http://community.foxsports.com/blog.../Over_Reds_Undead_Body_Celtics_Add_Dance_Team wow, this is really sad!!
they should've only waited 20 days .. . I bet he was really disappointed with the decision and he died after witnessing the celtics breaking his recommendation..
Bill Simmons Article on Red from four years ago. A great read: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/020322
