The crowd covers the lawn here at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, from the streetside entry gates down to the Willamette River. Portland fire officials estimate 60,000 people are packed inside the park proper and another 10-15,000 are watching outside the gates. Spectators are lining the bridge behind Obama and watching, bikini-clad, from boats on the river. The stump speech is Obama's standard riff - 30 minutes long and counting now, despite the sun beating down on the candidate. He's added a few Oregonian flourishes, drawing big cheers when he said the country can learn from Portland's commitment to mass transit and bicycle lanes. The biggest applause came when he denounced the Iraq war; Oregon is a hotbed of anti-war activism. At one point, someone in the crowd shouted an expression of love at Obama. He broke his speech for a moment: "I love you too," he said. "If you vote for me on Tuesday," he said, "We won't just win Oregon. We'll win this nomination, we'll win this general election. And you and I together, we'll change this country, we'll change the world." Seventy-five thousand people seemed to like the sound of that.
...and not one of them could name a single legislative accomplishment of Obama... but dang he mouths a nice speech in front of a teleprompter! And Oprah endorses him!

Duane Bray, the battalion chief with Portland Fire and Rescue, validated that crowd estimate, the campaign says. Here's the dispatch from NBC/NJ's Athena Jones... Some 75,000 people flocked to Portland’s waterfront Sunday to watch Barack Obama speak, making it the biggest rally the campaign has held to date. Thousands stood on the lawn, dozens watched from boats and from the bridge stretching across the Willamette River. A few kayakers held their paddles and tried to keep their kayaks straight as they watched the candidate, who stood on a makeshift platform. Obama hailed Clinton as a “formidable candidate," saying she "has been smart and tough and determined and she has worked as hard as she can and she has run an extraordinary campaign." He added a few lines to an otherwise typical stump speech, attacking presumptive GOP nominee John McCain for his ties to lobbyists, an issue the campaign is pushing and one the candidate spoke about with reporters earlier in the day. "John McCain now has had to get rid of five of his top advisers because it turns out they’re all lobbying, many of them for foreign governments. That’s because he practices the same kind of politics that we’ve grown accustomed to in Washington," he said, adding that his campaign did not take money from PACs or federal lobbyists and saying he would have meetings on C-SPAN rather behind closed doors with lobbyists "in their Gucci shoes." He also criticized President Bush for comments he made in Israel last week comparing those who would engage in direct diplomacy with governments like Iran to those who appeased Hitler. Obama's campaign has interpreted the comments as a hit against him and today he called such tactics "Karl Rove" politics. 75,000 is truly unbelievable! WOW! But it's a long slog of a campaign until November. It's been a long time since I've had this much excitement and uncertainty about an election. Having Obama involved will turn the world's rapt attention on the United States and I love that. A lot of bad things about us will come to light plus a lot of good stuff. Regardless of who wins, the next 5 1/2 months will be like a long, public self-examination. We will learn a lot about our country.
nice! So tonight while Obama speaks truth to thousands, McCain is having to explain why one of his campaign strategists is a lobbyist for dictators. This is going to be a landslide.

Its been a popularity contest since the first televised presidential debate. Thats why many people believe that great presidents like Lincoln, Washington et al would have never been elected if they had to go on tv. Has it occurred to you that the reason why alot of folks are getting excited and acting the way they are is because they HOPE that he means what he says about changing the way things are done in DC? Maybe they arent as cynical as some of us and think that maybe this guy is different? Id love to believe that he is different, because frankly Im long past sick and tired of the shenanigans going on with our stupid f-in politicians. and since I hate to ruin my track record of not making serious posts in here, here is a picture that I thought of when I typed that last sentence.
hehe, one man is not going to change anything in DC. i don't blame people to hope for changes though. but you gotta be realistic too.
Can you imagine being Barack at this moment, looking out at a crowd of 75,000 people, half of whom want f*** you and the rest that want to be you. Screw Rock 'N Roll, I want to be president!
Remember what I repeatedly tell people: You vote for an administration, not just a person. For example: The Bush administration. It isn't just ole' George, it's the complete catastrophe he created with his cabinet and adviser choices. I'm very hopeful that either Obama or McCain will change the direction this country is headed. "Stay the course" won't work. IMO, this election is about what kind of change people want because both guys will depart a lot from Bush's path.
Everyone here talks about this "catastrophe" that is the Bush admin. But most people I know are doing as well if not better now than 4 years ago. Didn't we have a thread on how people are doing compare to last year, and most were doing well. Damn, if you listen to CNN, you'd think everyone is going to lose their houses. For the people that are always b****ing and moaning, get some prospective on what real "catastrophe" is. Mortgage rate is still around 6 not 16, Inflation is not 18, unemployment is still very very low. You are still able to afford that flat screen tv to watch the rockets.
