Well, I'm going off to college and need some cheap transportation. Can anyone recommend a cheap, reliable moped?
Mopeds are like fat women. They're fun until your friends catch you riding them. You'll also be needing one of these:
Here's a nice hog for ya. Should get you from point A to B with great gas milage. Once you do get one though, you have to take it to Sam's Boat on Richmond Sundays. Many people with bikes go to hang out up there during the day, you'll have fun.
How far and how fast do you have to go? Where are you going to college? If you're going to a college town, and only need to go a few miles at a time, get a decent bicycle. You can carry quite a bit of stuff if you have a rack mounted on it, and park it anywhere for free. I bought a Trek mountain bike for ~$250 and have used it for about a year to commute back and forth around town, even grocery shopping. If you need to go a bit faster and farther, get a used motorcycle. A 250cc will be able to get you onto the highway if needed. It's also easier to find a parking space, and parking permits are usually cheaper. Plus, it's pretty easy to find used motorcycles and parts. You can get luggage racks for these too. I bought a '96 Suzuki GS500 for $2000 and have been commuting on it recently. It gets 50 mpg, will go over 100 mph on the highway, and accelerates quicker than most cars, while costing less than $300/year in insurance. Chicks dig it, too Are mopeds the same as scooters? Because scooters aren't really that much cheaper than motorcycles, if you stick with a reputable brand like Honda or Yamaha. Oh, I own two cars, but it's a lot more fun biking or motorcycling to work.
