I can't remember where I heard it, maybe a post game show in the preseason, but Adelman made some sort of comment about tipping the ball on rebounding. When the "short team" is on the court, you see them doing it constantly. Instead of grabbing the ball at their peak, they are trying to tip it out to a teammate. It's gotten to the point where Yao is trying to do it at times too. Yao, a 7-6 center taller than everyone else in the NBA is trying to tip the ball instead of grabbing the darn thing. Do you think this is something that they are focusing on because of the short front court or if this is something in Adelman's team philosophy that they are just now implementing this year? Anyone who was a frequent watcher of the Kings teams that he had or remembers what he did in Portland I would love to hear your opinion. I haven't seen us get out rebounded, well in quite some time. So it bothers me quite a bit.
I think it is Yao who thinks he can't guarentee he could grap the ball with his hands before the opposites get it. Keep in mind that Yao is tall but can't jump high. I won't say this is nothing related with the coach.
I was a big fan of those Kings teams, and they were a poor defensive team at first. But since 2002 they were a very good defensive team. Extremely underrated. They were also one of the best rebounding teams in the league. They were never undersized, so they never had to rely on an accurate tip. Even when they went "small" they still had the 6'10" Peja at PF. He would still be the 2nd tallest man on this team. A lot of people used to believe they were a run and gun team due to their high scoring. But truth is they simply used to get out and run on steals, blocked shots, or long rebounds. They were actually a half court team. They weren't a grind it out team by any means, but with their half court efficiency they were certainly capable of that. Plain and simple we are just undersized and have no choice but to get accurate tips, even when we got the position. It's not a philosophy. Tipping out an offensive rebound also isn't smart because that might set up a fast break for the other team. The PF's aren't the problem, just that when Yao goes out we can't have a 6'6" guy masquerading as a C. Yao tipping rebounds is a problem in itself.
I've said it time and time again we need a Power Forward who is at least 6"11 and can rebound + shot block. We are too short as a team and I think we can't make it all the way if we don't have another interior rebounder. Tipping the ball is great but our PF's and Yao need to get ready and practice tipping in a lot.
That's just it. Our PF's can rebound just fine. They were rebounding last year at a much higher rate than now (though Landry did have one good rebounding game as did Scola) but now with all this tipping we aren't getting the ball. We end up tipping it out and have a fifty fifty shot of our guards getting the ball or their guards getting the ball. Maybe they will get better at it, but I don't think it's as necessary as everyone seems to think. Or maybe I am wrong, maybe this isn't effecting their rebound rate, it's just appearance rather than reality. I just feel like I'd rather have them grab the ball and with their strength keep it than have them try to tip it and lose it, as is seems is happening now.
Just get the rebound. I don't care if you tip it. Just get it. This thread is a reach. I doubt any of the coaches are preaching to tip the ball. Rebounding is about size, positioning and timing. Yao's size alone makes him a great rebounder. Most of the rebounds that he doesnt get are because he lacks the athleticism and the quickness that most nba players have. It's not really about technique.
I think the real problem is were flat out missing too many shots. There are too many offensive rebounding opportunities to begin with. If we make our shots, then we wouldnt have to worry about offensive rebounding. I think our defensive rebounding is only bad when yao is out of the game.
You're going to make me go find the quote aren't you? I am not reaching, tell me they haven't been tipping it more than in the past.
Like I said....It may appear that way because we're missing too many shots. Yao is still not 100 percent back yet and his timing and rhythm is a little off. When he is not on the floor we are too small. i dont think it has anything to do with rebounding philosophy.
Rox just need better boxing out. The team's core is almost the same for the past few seasons. And this problem only came out today. Maybe do what JVG did, get more players to go for rebounds. It actually surprise me that this team is having problem on the boards. Rafer, tmac, artest are all outstanding rebounders for their position. Yao, scola, landry and hayes are competent rebounders.
Yup. We will be a good rebounding team in time. I don't think there is any question about that. We're 3-1, but if I had to worry about something, I would worry about our lack of dribble penetration when Brooks isn't in. We have also been pretty slow getting back on defense.
I wouldn't put this on Adelman. Yao has been playing volleyball with himself since his rookie year. Very frustrating, but there's nothing we can do about it. It's just part of his non-aggressive, non-Hakeem mentality. But at the same time, Mutombo uses the tipping technique as well, except he tips it to himself. It works because of his height, arm length, and tenacity. We need Deke!
I think you have to blame Adelman. You guys are missing one important thing: That JVG's defensive fingerprints on this team is slowly fading. Last year, it was still there, but this year, it's fading. This includes team rebounding. I think you guys are blaming Yao Ming for things that are not his fault. You're going to now blame TEAM rebounding on Yao Ming? and TEAM defense on Yao Ming? Come on. Basketball is a TEAM game. Yao's struggles might be because Adelman is coaching Yao this way.
This is the correct answer. When Yao has position on someone in the paint to get the Rebound, he must get it. This is : 1. Not the PF's job to grab rebounds if the ball is coming straight to Yao's position 2. Not a tipping drill if you are 7'6'' and the ball is coming toward your hands
Like I just said, Yao's been using his weak rebounding tipping technique since his rookie year, INCLUDING the JVG tenure. As far as team rebounding, I believe we were 3rd last year according to a Morey interview yesterday. This year we are terrible so far. As far as team defense, it's because of no Battier and no Mutombo.
So from everyone's posts so far, that no one other than me thinks that they are tipping the ball a lot more this season. Thanks everyone for the input. I honestly felt like they are doing it more often this season (and preseason) than they ever did before. Yes they would occasionally do it, but now it seems that they are all doing it more often. I guess it's just faulty perception on my part.
I've been watching the Kings for about 10 years and I can say it has nothing to do with his "philosphy." I've been watching Yao sonce he joined the league and I can say that he has been doing it all his career.
It's not Adelman's fault. Our assistant coach Don Chaney is in charge of coaching our big men when facing zone defenses.
