Maybe Houston Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy should be banned from the league. And not because he said a referee warned him officials were instructed to watch Rockets center Yao Ming more closely for moving screens during last season's playoffs. For that comment, NBA commissioner David Stern fined him $100,000.

In Houston, we have a new problem. Specifically, how to put the ball in the basket.

Van Gundy's Rockets (3-7) are last in the league in scoring, struggling to produce 83.9 points a game. Their latest effort was a 74-point showing Sunday night in an 11-point loss to the Indiana Pacers.

The Rockets haven't scored 100 points all season. Three times they have failed to hit 80. With these numbers, they would be lucky to beat Duke.

This is Van Gundy Ball. He loves to use the shot clock and preach defense. The only thing he enjoys more is hanging onto Alonzo Mourning's ankle for dear life.

Van Gundy sees 24 seconds as an eternity and when he is coaching, it sure seems that way. Every Rockets ticket should come with a warning: May cause drowsiness.

The game is supposed to be fun. It meant to be played. But here is Van Gundy trying to pitch a shutout.

Van Gundy likes to control the game, and there is nothing sadder than a 5-foot-9, balding, 43-year-old man with control issues -- unless that man is hanging onto another man's ankle.

During his five full seasons coaching the Knicks, Van Gundy's teams finished 19th, 25th, 27th, 27th, and 28th in scoring. In 1999, he led the eighth-seeded Knicks (27-23, 86.4 points a game) all the way to the NBA Finals using this strategy.

    Defense wins championships, he believes.

But Van Gundy doesn't just clamp down on the opposition. He defends against his own players, too.

Two seasons ago, Steve Francis averaged a career-low 16.6 points under Van Gundy. Allan Houston never averaged 20 points -- until Van Gundy left New York. Latrell Sprewell averaged 20 points in Golden State. Then he met Van Gundy in New York and averaged 17.9 over five seasons.

Last season Van Gundy experienced a scoring breakthrough of sorts, when the Rockets averaged 95.1 points (20th in the league) on their way to 51 wins. Of course, he did this with former scoring champion Tracy McGrady and 7-foot-5 Yao Ming (.552 field goal percentage).

This season's futility isn't only about McGrady's back spasms. He has played in six games and the Rockets have averaged 92.8 points in those, which would make them 23rd in the league.

This season's offensive offense is Van Gundy Ball. It's about playing scared.

I've got some problems with JVG, but this article is an ignorant cheap shot. Some writers are so lazy. They will always think of JVG in terms of those Knick teams no matter what and will continue to write about him that way. They either didn't watch the latter part of last season or the facts don't fit what they want to say about JVG.

That said, I do have problems with our offense, but to say the troubles are because JVG loves the slow down game is dumb.

If you look at the Rockets on offense, they don't seem to have a plan of attact at all. That's bad coaching.

I agree. For all the complaining about missed defensive assignments it seems like the whole team has yet to understand the Rockets offensive sets. Does this team even have set offensive plays to run like the rest of the NBA?

The real question is what do Moonies have against Jeff Van Gundy?

The Washington Times should be one of those banned links.

This guy is just bitter about JVG, who chose Houston over Washington, when deciding where to coach a few years ago,

He's just mad Washington, high scoring and all, will never be a contender. If they had a coach like JVG, maybe they'd be worth a damn.

By looking at the title, I thought it's about the Rockets was a "sleeper" as in an unsuspected contender. Oh, well.

BTW, windandsea, long time no see!

I usually pretty much agree with what you post, but this statement is wrong IMO. JVG has picked the players and he picked the system. If the system doesn't work, or the players don't fit the system. or the system doesn't fit the players or whatever is wrong, it sits squarely on JVG's shoulders. So, if it is 'broke', and it is, then it is JVG's job to fix it or move aside.

it may be a cheap shot, but its pretty hard to argue with the statistics he points out.

Eddie Jordan has an NBA championship ring.

Eddie Jordan has ties to Washington (if not necessarily the Wizards organization).

As of today, the Washington Wizards are several games in front of the Houston Rockets.

I am certain they are happy with their choice.

Here is what I'm talking about:
My only point is accusing JVG of making the players slow things down and milk the 24 second clock is not the cause of our problems on offense. It's the system itself. Our offense stinks and I don't blame it all on poor outside shooting and Tracy not playing. JVG has to make adjustments in either who gets playing time or in the offense itself.

I'll say this much: We need more penetration and aggression by the guards, more aggressive PnRs that actually lead to a pass to Yao down low, more cutting to the basket and more running the ball after clearing the defensive glass! Why do our guards walk the ball up so much? It's usually easier to score 3 on 3 than it is 5 on 5, isn't it? No more Yao setting worthless picks 30 feet from the basket. Blah blah blah. I could go on and on.

When I saw the title, "Real Sleeper," I thought it was going to be a positive article about how the Rockets is sleeping giant and that we will awake after the all star break when all our players are healthy. :(

Stopped after this line. They should really save that gem for the end of the article when it's already too late.

Umm, I'd say 49% of that plan is sitting on the bench with a bad back.
JVG is using Plan B, and no one has the heart to step up except for the Rookie.

Doesn't he contradict all the bad things he says about JVG's offense with this statement? The TEAM is NOT making shots, JVG isn't out there shooting the ball, making stupid TO's and not rebbounding.

In all fairness to JVG, I see him every single game flailing his arms at the guards to PUSH the ball up the court and make something happen.

Those Washington writers should worry about their Bullets who are at best a 2nd round playoff team.

With TMac JVG offense if fine.
Without TMac JVG offense is horrible.

    We ran last season.

We lack a strong rebounder and we still lack defensive chemistry and some quickness to stop penatration.

If and when TMac gets healthy then we shall see...

Otherwise get off JVG- he's a very good coach.

    Our record reflects our talent.

Too many people have an inflated view of our talent.

Yao is good, TMac is great and the rest are filler.
