Reagan's Family Criticizes Use Of Reagan In Anti-Kerry Ad
Family Says Group Does Not Have Permission To Use Reagan's Image

    POSTED: 10:28 am EDT June 16, 2004

WASHINGTON -- Ronald Reagan's family is criticizing the use of the late president's image in a conservative political ad endorsing President George W. Bush.

The ad comparing Bush's war on terror with Reagan's battle against communism is being run by the conservative interest groupClub for Growth starting Wednesday. It shows footage of Reagan at the Berlin Wall, and Bush at ground zero.

The ad also said Democratic presidential contender John Kerry was "wrong then, wrong now" on national security.

A Reagan family spokeswoman said the group does not have permission to use Reagan's image in the ad because doing so implies his endorsement.

Club for Growth said it wants to show how similar Bush and Reagan have been "in terms of fighting evil." A Kerry spokesman said it's "pretty sad" that Bush supporters are already politicizing the nation's farewell to Reagan.

I am not surprised they would use Reagan in their ads. Desperate situations call for desparate measures. I think many Americans will find this is a tasteless tactic by the Republicans to garner some more votes.

Are their any conservatives on this board that really believe Bush is comparable to Reagan in any aspect?

There's a great quote from Ron Reagan at the 2000 convention where he just blasts Bush. I wish I could find it and even though it's 4 years old, if I find it, I'll still start a thread about it like Faos would.

What else *could* Bush run on? His record?

I don't know if it is worthy of a new thread but...

Ron Reagan, a television commentator who has frequently been critical of Mr. Bush, has already said as much. In 2000, he fired a shot at Mr. Bush in Philadelphia during the Republican convention, which featured a tribute to his father. "What's his accomplishment?" Mr. Reagan asked then. "That he's no longer an obnoxious drunk?"

Last year, in an interview with the online magazine Salon, Mr. Reagan renewed his critique, making clear his distaste for the Bush administration.

"The Bush people have no right to speak for my father, particularly because of the position he's in now," Mr. Reagan said then. "Yes, some of the current policies are an extension of the 80's. But the overall thrust of this administration is not my father's - these people are overly reaching, overly aggressive, overly secretive and just plain corrupt. I don't trust these people."

Ron Reagan always seemed pretty down to earth, with a good sense of humor. I watched the children's speeches at the funeral, and I immensely enoyed his.

I also agree with his assessment of the Bush administration.

Speaking of RR2, is their a site to get in what he really believes in? I was impressed by most of his speech (except the religion part where he showed his politics were as important as honoring his father on a national stage) and tried to do a couple searches on him. Maybe he has had a screwy childhood or maybe it's because he's so visible but seems to be alot of stories about his religion (atheist?), lifestyle (despite the fact he is married), choices (leaving college to joint the ballet), etc. But I really couldn't find what he believed in, except he doesn't like the Bush administration.
Again i don't know what to believe about RR2 and just wanted to see if there was a site about him. He is interesting, especially since his father was a liberal early on and then switched to the conservative party.

I haven't seen any sites outlining his religious beliefs. They may be out there, or perhaps they exist a book somewhere.

I kind of liked the Religion part of his speech. It seemed like he really wanted to make sure people knew about his Father's religion and then contrasted some ways that his father practiced that religion than the way some others practice it.

Didnt someone say last week that the Democrats and John Kerry were trying to use Reagan's death for political gain? I could have sworn someone posted that. I wonder what that person has to say now??? If only I could find who posted it...

To be fair this ad is coming from one of those new republican 527s. So it's not really a Bush-Cheney ad.

Haven't seen it so I can't really comment.

Why does President Reagan's family hate America?

    Couldn't resist this one....

I saw someone's signature today linking Sen. Kerry to Osama for obvious partisan reasons? So how does Reagan or his family members figure in this link going by the logic of that signature?

Oh btw, I would take those alleged Reagan's with a grain of salt because I suspect his disease probably distorted his opinion at the time he expressed it.
