As everyone knows, there were a lot of critics and doubters concerning Yao Ming the moment he became available for the 2002 NBA draft. The most pessimistic of the critics claimed that Yao Ming would be a huge bust and Houston would be making a huge mistake in drafting him. But even the most optimistic supporters said that it might take years before he would make an impact and cautioned everyone to be patient with him.

He has now played over half the games of the 2002-2003 season and although he did struggle initially and still struggles from time to time, he has truly made remarkable progress. So I am curious as to the reaction people on this BBS have towards Yao Ming's progress based on their initial expectations of him prior to the start of the season and have started this poll:

His 13, 8 is about what I expected. I expect him to get 17, 9, 3 assists, 2.5 blks, 50% FG, 77% FG after the all star break. Come play off time, watch out. Yao will be a beast and there should be no question as who the #1 option is on the team.

I have followed Yao for 3 years but the thing that SUPRISES me the most is that he RARELY gets in foul trouble. He has not fouled out yet nor had his minutes limited significantly due to foul problems.

Can those who voted "extremely dissapointing" express themselves as to what you had initially expected?

    Interested in hearing...

He has definitely more than exceeded my expectations. His current averages are about what I was expecting his season highs to be...meaning that I never thought he would be scoring big in games or passing out 6 assists a game. To me, that is the amazing thing, that he has been so accurate with his passes despite the huge change in size and speed of the NBA over the CBA.

Thanks for everyone who voted so far.

I must admit the results are somewhat surprising. Remember Yao Ming was the number one pick overall and his numbers, while good, aren't earth shattering either. I would have expected a few more "He is doing as well as I expected" votes, but the overwhelming majority is either somewhat surprised by his performance or completely astonished.

Based on the voting results, it would seem that people had very low expectations of Yao Ming as far as his performance goes in his rookie year.

The only other number one pick in recent memory that might have elicited a similar lack of expectations is Kwame Brown.

(I know it's off-topic so but it would be interesting if a similar poll was made on the Chicago Bulls BBS regarding Jay Williams' performance.)

He has to get over that 13.0 ppg hump first. He's been stuck at 12.5-13.0 ppg range for a while now. It's almost like the 13.0 ppg is his max.

Speaking of Kwame Brown, so far this is the worst number one pick ever. Yes he needs time to develop but is that what you expect from a number one pick?

13/8/3 blks were my season expectations. His numbers were skewed because of lack of playing time early on, so if he had gone to a lotto team that needed heavy rebuilding, he would definitely have insane numbers (despite his recent fatigue) IMO.

True.. But his averages for last week (4 games) were 18, 10, 2.8 assist, 2.8 blks, 63% fg, 78% FT. I am hoping that he will produce %s similar to these for the rest of the year.

stat-wise, YM didn't exceed my expectations. however, he gives ROX more than just 13/8/2. Those are just numbers. ROX are now playing as a team, a championship-caliber team!

One of those guys who said Yao did not meet their expectation has to be Polypheus.

I couldnt stand the thought of drafting YAO, but after watching him, I think he was worth the pick. It took his play in America to prove me wrong not how he played in China. But eitherway he has proved his worthiness to me... So I voted the top one, he is better now than I ever imagined. If he stays at 13pts 8 rebs. I would be happy, but it seems he is going to be even better....

I was really hoping he would be like Gasol. Skinny and weak, but not afraid of going inside, and having very good footwork and a soft touch and the ability to finish. Of course, he is MUCH MUCH better than that, so he exceeded my wildest dreams!

I didn't expect anything. But he has surprised me. Impressive. Great.

I would have picked him fifty million times over Jay Williams. 100 million times over Mike Dunleavy.

he has exceeded my predictions for his rookie season.

i always knew he would be a good/great centre for us, but not so intimidating (at least this year)! How he forces teams and players to consistantly change their game plan/shots is what has bumped him over the line to the higher category for me.

In order for Yao to play like a possessed fool like Gasol his rookie year, he has to be on a team where he is the primary guy......aka sorry team. However, the Rockets are pressured to make it to the playoffs this year with or without Yao. Yao has met my expections because I knew he could play before he was an all star rookie( hehe ).

Yao contributes in the ways that are beyond numbers. He energizes the team, his plays and presents guide, modify and enable game plans at much higher levels, therefore, provides realistic hopes and expectations for achieving championships in the many years to come.

His plays demonstrate skill and wisdom, and is pleasant to watch than Shaq's fighter/monster moves, and it is the way that the basketball should be played, and enjoyed. That's is why he is the starter in the all star game.

He is the catalyst, the "missing link", the one. :)
