Looks like it is time to replace my old water heater. It is 8-years old and lasted two years past the warranty.

I had a Kenmore brand water heater before, and searching the web there seems to be a lot of negative publicity about the current brand I have.

Anyone have suggestions on a new brand?

I need a 50-60 gallon, electric upright water heater for placement in my garage.

A plumber buddy of mine told me to go with Rheem, but it looks like only professional plumbers can buy those - and not the general public.

Any thoughts? Anyone want to share their happiness with their existing water heater?

If you feel like spending, get a tankless, but if you feel regular, just go get the home depot special or get another kenmore

do you have a tankless water heater? i have heard mixed reviews on them, such as the cost to savings is exaggerated.

I never heard of a water heater prematurely breaking so I don't think reliability is an issue.

stay away from Whirlpool! My new one crapped out in 2.5 years. I did some research and apparently that's the norm. They'll do everything they can to keep from replacing it should something go wrong. But that doesn't prevent the replacement from going bad too. I went with the Rheem and I did have my plumber install it (not like i could do it myself, just not comfortable with gas). I figure, i'd rather pay it to get installed right and have a quality product.

I dont, but u get an energy credit or something. I have a friend who has one and its instant hot water. I just figure every 8-10 yrs you spend $400 on a water heater and be done with it

Did a bit of research a few months back as our water heater is pushing 25 and has a lot of sediment buildup.

There are advantages and disadvantages to owning a tankless water system... depends on how far away the tankless system is to your faucets, how much water you use and how big your house is...so you may not actually save money in the long run. Plus, you may have to replace your venting because the tankless systems get really hot, much hotter than a tank system... and that venting apparently is expensive to install too.

Also do not get water heaters from Lowes, Home Depot, Sears, etc...the Kenmore, GE, Whirlpool brands...from what I've read... are complete crap. Seems the best bet is Rheem or Bradford White, which you can't get unless a licensed plumber installs it. Kind of sucks because it doesn't seem too hard to install, but apparently Texas has some code where only licensed plumbers are supposed to install water heaters...I guess because you're working with gas/electricity.

Personally, I'd rather pay a plumber to install a solid brand water heater that may last 10-15 years than put in a water that may not even last 5.

Also, you can extend the life of your water heater if you replace the anode rod every few years.

I think I need to replace that anode rod pretty soon. Is it easy to do that.

If you have the setup, go with a Rinnai Tankless hot water heather. Mine paid for itself in energy savings after about a year.

Yeah you should be able unscrew it from the top of the water heater. You can get a replacement from the hardware store for around 20 bucks.

I have a tankless water heater in the apartment I'm renting, and it's quite the opposite. Hot water takes about a minute from when I turn on the faucet.

Isn't hard water the kryptonite for water heaters? I can hear mine popping from sediment. It's about 8 years old. I hate that it's in the attic.

A solar water heater will be the most energy efficient. they are expensive on installation but you will get a rebate.

I would not go tankless if you are on electricity unless you have them at most of the faucets in the house. Meaning you would want to have one in each bathroom and the kitchen.

Yes, if you are putting hard water though an electric water heater the elements will get messed up easily.

Ours just went out too. repair guy just replaced some heater component on it instead of replacing the entire thing.

I don't think our water has ever gotten this hot.

My mom can install a water heater...literally. Then again I have a super mom. She can build a closet and works as a seamstress at David's Bridal. No joke.

I think Ive been in this home 15 years and we've switched it once when we moved in and once recently.

I just replaced mine and my research told me to go with Bradford White.

Better than Rheem, Kenmore or Whirlpool.

The guy I went with also did a good job, fast, and cheap. Cheaper than J Moore by a bunch.
