The Astros have 10 days to trade, release or outright Chavez to the minors. They recalled catcher Humberto Quintero from Round Rock. Quintero is the catcher they stole for Tim Redding. He is a good defensive catcher but can also hit. He was hitting .298, 7 hr, 28 RBI's. I wonder what the catcher rotation will be now since Roy O won't have Chavez as his personal catcher. Chavez is a good guy but he couldn't hit.

    It starts.

I didn't think it looked good for Chavez when they pinch hit for him today with Palmiero.

No big suprise... Q will be the full-time catcher starting next year, with Ausmus serving as the backup and future manager.

Remeber Greg Zaun got cut because he couldn't hit and now he is hitting will in Toranto. Hope Chavez gets the same break.

Chavez brightest highlight with the Astros was his postseason homer against the Braves.

:D Thats cold. Didn't he have a clutch hit against the Cards in the NLCS? I know before the Astros take the field at home they play a U2 song and show all the highlights from last postseason. I saw a bunch of white towels waving and Chavez on first base clapping his hands.

I knew Tony Eusebio. Tony Eusebio was a friend of mine.

Raul Chavez is no Tony Eusebio.

I look at Quintero's numbers and I start to laugh out loud. How in the world did we get a player anywhere near that level for Tim Redding? Tim Purpura might not turn out to be anywhere close to being as good as a gm as The Hun was, but he at least seems to have the same knack of screwing over people in trades.

Because people loved to use the same tired lines when it came to Redding:

"He has great stuff... maybe better than Oswalt."
"Look at what he did in the minors... he just needs to be in the right environment."
"At this point, a change of scenery will do him good... imagine what he can do in the big petco park, compared to tiny minute maid."

Frankly, I never saw good "stuff" from Redding. His fastball topped out at 91-92mph, his curveball was flat (and he could never throw it for a strike), he had an awful changeup... and he had no mental game. To top it all off, he was so full of himself (because of the constant affore-mentioned quotes being spewed out about his 'talent'), that he refused to even try to become a good bullpen pitcher.

At least he didn't get some big contract from a sucker team before he finally collapsed. He'll be back one day... as a low-paid reliever... with not much fanfare.
