I wanted to do this in the bash rafer thread, I thought it deserves its own thread since we have many diff opinions about each of our point guards

    so here is my idea

please rate our PG's, 1 through 5, and explain what you like, dislike, what needs to be improved and so on....

I'm at work right now and will provide my own analasys little later

please rate first and secondly under each pg write your own short explanation/analasys

Can I ask why penetration and stamina are in the same category? And as an aside, why head isn't included in this poll? ;) :p

Why is the guy who has played the second most minutes at PG not in this poll?

    you mean Mac?

he's no PG, and I was thinking this could be a good idea since many topics are basically discussions about our PG needs

I just rated them 1-3. With 1 being the best and 3 being the 3rd best.

    Alston
    Shot: 2
    Passing: 1
    Court vision: 2
    Penetration/Stamina:2
    Leadership: ?

    Lucas
    Shot: 1
    Passing: 3
    Court vision: 3
    Penetration/Stamina: 3
    Leadership: ?

    Spanoulis
    Shot: 3
    Passing: 2
    Court vision: 1
    Penetration/Stamina: 1
    Leadership: ?

Spanoulis definitely will show penetration skills and court vision eventually, when he is ready to play. No idea on leadership.

you can break it down if you like..I though it might be a better idea keeping those two things together

    ohhh head!?

dunno, I might have forgotten him since he is more of a undersized small forward...

    Alston:
I think in general, Rafer sits on the fence of being a total disaster and being considered one of the better pg's in the league. Let's be honest, in this league as a pg, you are either good or not. You have to be able to hit open shots, create a few shots, and see the open man. He does an ok job of this, but has a ton of room for improvement, which we will probably never see.

shooting: 3...his shooting % should be better being that many of his shots are wide open. He just doesn't hit them. Not hitting a few opwn shots is ok for a player as long as he has the ability to distinguish btwn when your shot is falling or not. He however cannot do this being that he will shoot and shoot till he get his % to his favorite number...25. He shoots a lower % from 3pt line than Luther , but just keeps on-a-jacking.

Passing:4...he can pass. Using skills that he obviously developed in his street ball days, he has creativity on delivery and is pretty accurate.

Court vision:2..he doesn't have much of this. First of all, when Yao is in the game, he doesnt need it much since the ball will go down to the post. But in transition, I have noticed players stranded at the 3pt line, feet set, hands out to take the pass, and he willeither pull it out, or tear drop it, where he will make it only 25% of the time. He doesnt always see the player on the move to the basket. As a "ball handler" he should see those things and have more than 5 assists a game.

Penetration/stamina:3...he can occasionally get in the lane and try to finish or kick out, but being small, he really doesnt have a whole lot of success at finishing which means the defense can pretty much gear up for the kick out.
Most of the penetration that occurs with respect to Rafer is unfortuantely from the opposition, where it is not very challenging to take the little h=guy to the rack.

Leadership:2..I dont think he is a leader. He knows how to talk it up sometimes and usually speaks the truth, but he is not a leader on the court.
I think this is an area that he can be more assertive in but unlikely because this is a character quality that usually just is there or isnt. If anyone should step up and lead this team it should be him, but please by all means should not attempt to do so with his horrid shooting.

I think the rest of the PGs are pretty much incomplete due to lack of PT. But they each have their good and bad qualities. I like both of their potential.

    Alston:
    Shot: 2
    Passing: 3.5
    Court vision: 3
    Penetration/Stamina: 3
    Leadership:3
    Defense: 2

No need to explain about shooting, the guy would be a 1 except for his respectable 3pt percentage.
He's a creative passer, passes the ball well and on-target, and in general finds a way to get the ball where he wants it. Would be a 4 except sometimes he makes some pretty poor decisions on when to pass or not (i'd like to see him kick it out on his drives more often...especially with his poor percentages on those drives)

As for stamina...I don't really see him having many stamina issues. He can take his man off the dribble fine, but can't really finish very well.

Leadership is ok, except again he makes poor decisions at times.

    Lucas:
    Shot: 3
    Passing: 2
    Court vision: don't know.
    Penetration/Stamina: 3
    Leadership: 1
    Defense: 2

Lucas is a better shooter than Alston. He's a mediocre passer, and I've rarely seen him pass when he's in "attack mode". Dribbles way too much, and looks for his own shot too much. The good side is he's really quick and penetrate, the downside is he's one-dimensional.

    Spanoulis
    Shot:1
    Passing:3
    Court vision:3
    Penetration/Stamina:2
    Leadership:1
    Defense:3

Worst shooter of the lot. Can't hit the side of a barn from 3pt land. He's got nifty passes and good court vision, but still makes very poor decisions. Probably the best one-on-one defender we have at PG, but poor team defense.

I am assuming that 1 is low and 5 is high.

    Alston
Shot: 2.5 (better from 3 point range but has to be wide open, cannot hit under any kind of duress, not good from midrange, not a good finisher)
Passing: 4 (decent passer, would be a better passer assist man in a different style offense)
    Court vision: 3.5 decent
Penetration/Stamina: 2.5 decent at getting in the lane, cannot finish at all. Stamina very average and goes down defensively late in the 3rd quarter through the 4th qaurter. Should only be playing 20-25 mpg.
Leadership: 2-Doesn't seem to be much of a leader especially on a team that is led by McGrady and Yao. When they are gone, JVG is the leader. No dominant court presence.

    Lucas
Shot: 3.5 unproven but seems to be more reliable than Rafer, especially with extended minutes. Can create his own shot and is a decent if not good finisher.
Passing: 3 haven't seen him pass enough to rate him much higher.
    Court vision: 3 average
Penetration/Stamina: 4 great penetrator because of his size, quickness, and ball handling skills and has the ability to finish well. Hasn't played enough to grade his stamina.
Leadership: 2, doesn't strike me as a leader.

    Spanoulis
    Shot: 2-needs some work.
Passing: 4-right on the money, does force the ball sometimes because of lack of experience.
Court vision: 5-eyes in the back of his head.
Penetration/Stamina: 4-good penetrator. Not enough minutes to establish stamina.
Leadership: 4 I think he is a leader and with experience he could be a 5. He has the "it" factor that teammates love.

    For fun...

    Head
    Shot:3.5
    Passing: 2
    Court vision: 3
    Penetration/stamina: 3
    Leadership: 3
    Defense: 2

Head is a money shooter. Isn't a 4 because his midrange game is pretty crappy, and he still has trouble finishing around the rim. He's okay at passing, but nothing special. On the other hand he sees the court fairly well, makes good decisions most of the time, and steps up and hits big shots and tries to rally the team. He's an ok defender, but not good.

I also think "ballhandling" is a major missing category. You know, because the PG does have to dribble the ball upcourt.

1-5 based on what's available on our team or what's expected by league standards?

    Alston
Shot: 2 (just slightly better than terrible)
Passing: 3 (better than this year shows)
Court vision: 3 (I think his passing is better than his vision, though)
Penetration/Stamina: 3 (can get to the hole, can't finish)
Leadership: 1 (I just think he is always "there" and not much else)

    Lucas
Shot: 3 (with confidence he is a great shooter)
    Passing: 1 (often poor decisions)
Court vision: 1 (seems to get himself in trouble a bit)
Penetration/Stamina: 3 (not a big enough sample but seems fine)
Leadership: 1 (too inexperienced right now)

    Spanoulis
Shot: 1 (pretty close to worthless right now)
Passing: 2 (has better potential but right now gets in the air too often before he passes)
Court vision: 3 (again, natural talent but his turnovers are due to poor NBA vision)
Penetration/Stamina: 3 (he can often get by his man but fails to finish or gets blocked too much)
    Leadership: 1 (too new)

    Head
Shot: 5 (accurate and clutch...only flaw is creating his own shot more)
Passing: 2 (can be good, can be bad)
Court vision: 1 (doesn't have pg instincts)
Penetration/Stamina: 3 (pretty good slasher and seems like he is the best finisher of the bunch, despite not being that great)
Leadership: 2 (he is clutch so that helps a little)

alston is a pretty godd point.........he just needs to quit shooting the 3 so much and pass and penetrate more.

    Lucas
    Shot:4
    Passing:2
    Court vision:2
    Penetration/Stamina:penetration4 stamina4
    Leadership:3
lucas is very quick you can see that he is a step quicker than rafer, and so far he has made most of his open shots in the time he has been given. he could use some lessons in passing but when t-mac is on the court this is not as important (we need someone who can hit the open shot) he needs more time for me to really be able to have a good grasp on what he is really capable of.

    Spanoulis
Shot:1 (lacks confidence, we all saw what he is capable of in the world games)
Passing:3 (makes some good passes btu turns the ball over to much)
    Court vision:4
Penetration/Stamina:penetration3 (get to the basket but misses to often) stamina3
    Leadership:2
spanoulis has the tools to become good but is not there yet, he sometimes looks lost and his confidence in his shot is shaken. on the other hand he plays hard and with passion and is a team player. right now i feel lucas is ahead of him but i feel he will become a good player in this league once he gets used to it.

i feel overall right now rafer should probably start (yikes :D ) but JL III should be getting more min to help keep rafer fresh. v-span needs more time on the court as well to get a handle on playing with the caliber of athelete in the NBA....what was up with the starters being in the game with 5 min to go and over a 20 point lead....i know this isnt a JVG thread but if you ask me only an idiot would leave the starters in (esp t-mac) at that point in the game, get our youngsters some time onthe court.
