They may not have the stomach for it twice and the short one year delay ties in well with Houston's financial situation following Hakeem's retirement. With the current roster, how much cap space will come available the following year, should Rashard stay in Seattle for 2 years and again opt for Free Agency? Gathering some of Houston's extra first-round picks may look like a sensible course of action to Seattle. True, these are mostly wishful musings. Not meaning to knock Lewis or anything, but if he would take a look around and see the kind of cash being thrown around, it would be worth his while to take a one yr deal. Tim Thomas got 67 mil over 6 yrs, Austin Croshere for 51 mil over 7 yrs, etc. At the rate he was improving I thought it only made sense for him to go out onto the open market next summer. Lewis has the type of body frame like Tim Thomas that teams drool over and pay a ton of money for. Teams just love multi position 6-10 athletes. No official deal has been announced to my knowledge. About 3-4 days ago, the report was a 2 year deal, with Rashard getting a player option on year 2 (meaning he could opt out next year, when the Rockets have room). Though, today Seattle says Rashard is expected to sign a 3 year deal, player option for the 3rd year. Neither has any official quotes, or is a done deal. This deal makes perfect sense. He has financial security in case the worst happens and it is the deal that best helps his team since it will allow them to use their $2,250,000 option elsewhere. I hope if a scenario like this happens in the future with the Rockets, the outcome will be the same. Rashard Lewis is a very classy player and I wish hium all the luck in the world; except when he plays Houston. ------------------

The decision Rashard made (if it becomes official) I can only attribute to loyalty or classiness. Which is good and all, but he could have made a lot of money on the open market in 2001. I am still amazed that Tim Thomas got the max, and Croshere got 51 mil. I guess that's the point of my thread: what he has done here is to straddle the fence. He shows some loyalty to Seattle and earns a nice paycheck, but he's left a few doors ajar and all the windows open. Signing a one-year deal (with an option year) may have been too obvious an indication of plans to leave. But the rumored two-year deal (with another option year) brings the nightmare (for Seattle anyway) upon them again all-too-soon. He could have gotten a bigger payday, couldn't he.... unless he has an ulterior motive. What is it? I've heard Thomas signed a 6 year 67 mill deal most places, though I recall seeing one 6 year 60 mill. I'm pretty sure that's the max. I think that Rashard will play the 2 years, and then just simply weigh his options again. If things are goin well in Seattle, I think he will just stay there. But if things aint so well there(GP is gonna be older, Baker, etc), then I think he will bolt to Houston. I was really hopin that he'd sign a 1 year deal though. that would make the chances of him coming here a lot higher. Lewis to Sign Tomorrow Rashard Lewis is in Seattle with his family. In fact he's throwing out the first pitch in the Mariners game tonight. Lewis decided to sign a two year deal, with a player option for a third year with the Sonics, a source close to the negotiations told NBAtalk tonight. Lewis' contract will be for the league average (a little under $4 million a year). The Sonics will hold a press conference tomorrow to announce the signing. Can't WE give him that much??? a little under 4 nillion???? Two years is too long to wait, and i think, unless he demands a trade next year, we're a sure bet to pick up Terrence Morris, Francis' buddy from Maryland....He's projected as a top 5-6 player.....Then we can pick up a PF through free agency, a not so goood but not soo bad PF/C also.....the two lower picks, i think, will be traded...... ------------------
Since Rashard Lewis has apparently pulled himself out of the 2001 free agent class, the Rockets will have to address their frontcourt issues in other ways. Unless they can get Webber or Finley, the Rockets will have to acquire the key frontcourt player they need either via trade or draft. Dan Langhi should really help if he can keep showing the promise he displayed at RMR.
