no way, doesn't this make Lewis one of the top paid players in the NBA? This guy IMO deserved half of this, 10 million, and now 20??

I agree. This stuff gets ridiculous. There should only be 1 max player per team and even then it can not be players like Lewis. Has he been o more than 1 all star game? Is he in the top 5 in any category?

Rashard Lewis is this decade's Juwan Howard. Congratulations to him. It means lots of kids around Houston will be helped.

OK, did I miss it? What are the specifics of the trade?

All I see is something about the Magic trading a 2nd-round pick but that wouldn't make any sense if that is all that they gave up.

    You're right, this is insane.

Why would the Magic do this? Didn't they already have him at 5 years and 75/85M?

He's good, but not THAT good....

They're stupid if they think Rashard is gonna blow up into a superstar and join the ranks of the elite: Kobe, D-Wade, T-Mac, etc. I believe he might get a little better but his game right now doesn't even warrant 12 mil a year.

    Also in the article:

"Magic franchise center Dwight Howard is expected to sign his five-year contract extension worth at least $85 million on Thursday. The exact worth of the contract won't be official until next July when the NBA sets the salary cap for the 2008-09 season. Howard will have an opt-out clause after the fourth season, meaning he can become a free agent again after the 2012-13 season."

Looks like they aren't going to have any spare money for a while!

Nuts! Please don't bash Rashard though. A few of you have.
You can bash the Magic all night long though...

almost every mediocre to good free agent the last few years has gotten overpaid. look at guys like dampier and foyle on the warriors. teams know they have to pay over market value for decent players, and until every team draws a line, it will probably continue.

Madness... pure insanity. Lewis is good, but good enough for half that salary, if that.

i have no problem with lewis taking that much money, seriously if any one of us were in that position we'd take the money and run without thinking twice.

i just have to question the magic front office giving him that much money, seriously at this point after the offer was made and a tenative agreement was made I am sure they heard a lot of heat locally and nationally about overpaying for rashard and they go and do something that would futher increase his salary.

its not that rashard is a bad player, in fact he is a really good player but he isnt worth a max contract and besides the $ side of things i dont see him being a player that can compliment dwight howard well. imo saving the cap space for next year when there are more "big name" FAs available (and thus getting probably a better value) to get someone that can go along with howard would better serve the team for the future.

unless they truly believe that ariza will become a premiere 2 guard and nelson an above pg then maybe rashard wasnt a bad choice but at that price tag it never will be a smart one
