RA's offense system - do we really need Yao?

With the way the offense is run under RA, maybe trading Yao is really not such a bad idea.

We've all seen from tonight's game that when Yao is not on the floor, the offense ran much more smoothly and Scola was really effective at getting the points. However, when Yao was in, the guards always seemed to attempt to get Yao the ball first and when that failed, which happened more often than not, they then swung the ball to the other side and the 'motion' started flowing. Although sometimes worked, this process is not efficient at all as several valuable seconds were wasted at trying to get the ball into the post, when time is more precious under a Princeton-like offense system than a JVG system.

Ofcourse when teams are not fronting Yao, he can be very effective at scoring, but as more and more teams realize how perfectly the fronting defense works at taking Yao out of his game under RA's offense system, what happened tonight could become a norm for Yao, i.e. high turnovers and low shooting percentages.

When Tmac comes back, life will be easier for everybody, including Yao, and Tmac and Yao's pick n' roll game is one of the dealiest weapons that this team has. However, I'm not sure if Yao's the only one who can do what this offense is asking him to do.

In this offense, it seems that the center's key responsibilities include mostly iniatiting the offense from the high post, setting picks and grabing offensive rebounds. Scoring points, which was Yao's most important role under JVG, has become none esstential, especially with the new additions to this team - Scola can score, Bonzi can score, Mike James can score and we still have Steve at the end of the bench. Once the players get used to the new system, points will come from every positions, not just 2 and 5.

This leads to the question: do we really need Yao, a max player? can we pay less for a center who can just initiate our offense, set picks, grab rebounds and score a few points here and there, with less turnovers?

Maybe by getting rid of Yao, money saved can be spent on upgrading the point guard position - which is what this team desperately needs.

    In before the lock...

Yao is not going to be traded before age 35. There's no way to get equal value for him, even if you don't think he fits into Adelman's system, which he does. He has the skills (passing, outside shooting) that are typical of Ademan's centers, plus the low post game that is typical of big men that actually win championships.

Yeah, I liked that play in the 1st quarter where they were trying to get him the ball down low and they said screw it and he popped out for an 18 footer.

Yao sucks, ship his lazy soft ass to LA for more athletics young players.

young guys like Kwame and Bynum and Odom can really help this turn this team into a high octane machine.

    Trade Yao for

    Bynum, Brown, Odom, and Cook.

Let Kobe have houston's garbage (aka Yao)

you forget that this also a business. Yao is too big of a cash cow for Les to be let go. Yao will never be traded unless he demands it.

The chances of Yao ending his career as a rocket are higher than him being traded

The OP has a point. The answer is no, Brad Miller can run this offense better than Yao can. He will also bring back a haul for the Rockets; if they call up the Lakers and ask for Kobe the Lakers will almost certainly do it.

    Adelman is wasting Yao's talents.

My only comment to this dumb and stupid thread is

Only in your weirdest dreams that would happen. Les Alexander would trade Rick Adelman's and any other mis-fits' @r$es off before he will trade away Yao Ming.

    IBTL !!

I don't understand how a die hard YOF fan can possibly agree with that. RA's offense for his centers rely heavily on shooting and passing. Yao's not deficient in either one. A true "die hard YOF" fan would believe that Yao's biggest flaw is his inability to get the right calls. ;)

Wow, what a first post. Are you trying to be sarcastic or what?

Lets' see, you registered in early October. The 6-1 record was not exciting enough for you to make one single post. And now you suddenly jumped out from nowhere to throw out this lame personal attack when things is not going well. Looks like you have been waiting for this moment for a long time. What other screen name do you use on this board?

Whether you agree with him or not, the OP seems to be sincere to try to make a suggestion to help the team. I personally don't have problem with what he said. The only pervert that I saw in this thread is yaomanyax.
