To continue the discussion that was beginning in the thread about SPM being found guilty...

Flava of the month?? I would hardly call Eminem, Nas out some of the better groups out of Atlanta like Outkast flavors of the month. However you could lump 98% of Houston rappers in that group even though they put out record after record(of crap they call music). Every single song they all rap about the same boring platinum chains, Benz's, money and ho's. There is nothing original, including their recycled beats. Don't get me wrong, I like a few H-Town rappers, most notably Scarface and Lil' Keke to name a few, but most of these other clowns like the entire Cash Money clowns, Yungstar, Big Tymers, etc have zero talent. I've seen 12 year olds that have 10 times better rhyming skills.

As for Screw, I guess it is an aquired taste because I think it's crap. How much talent or should I say nerve to steal someone elses original music and slow it down so it sounds like the devil then put it out as your own?? IMO this is the most blatent form of
copyright infringment known to date. Either the artists he is ripping off don't care or don't know. What I don't get is how people can actually listen to it, but like you said, it is an aquired taste.

I was never a big fan of Eminem(and still aren't really), but I do like what I've heard from his new album. As for Nas, you can't even begin to compare any rapper in Houston(outside of Scarface who I agree is one of the best lyricist's in the history of rap music) to him. IMO he is also one of the best lyricist's ever.

I posted on this in the other thread. You must not know what you're talking about because there have been many guys out of Houston who were damn good lyricist, but I guess they're not as good as Nas seeing as how they don't come out on MTV.

K-Rino is one off the top of my mind. Man that guys could come out with some lyrics, probably even better than Nas.

MJG was really good also, but never blew up like he should. If you go back and check out his solo album I think you'd agree.

    Tela was good.

I wouldn't say Keke is an amazing lyricist, but he could get down with the best of them.

Klondike Kat was pretty good too.

The Fakkulty as a group were great lyricists.

These guys may not have had that off beat East Coast style, but they were good lyricist. You probably haven't heard of some of them, but their records/albums can be found.

Also on Outkast, how can you say they're a flavor of the month when they've been making great music before Nas made his name and long before Eminem made it big. You can't argue that they've been good.

    Southernplayalisticadillacmusic - really good album
    ATLiens - great album
    Aquemini - another good album
    Stankonia - great album

And they're still making good music.

Go back and re-read my post. I never called Outkast a flava of the month. I actually said otherwise. Also Outkast(one of my favorite groups) came out at the same time as Nas(1994).

The other rappers you mentioned, I've heard all of them(and like
most of them too), except for K-Rino(never heard of him, but I do live in Austin now). MJG(actually from Tennessee) has been one of my favs going back to his first release with Eightball, Coming Out Hard.

Tela is ok, but hardly a great rapper.

Getting to your MTV dig, I never watch it, unless the Osbourne's is on. I'm more into the old school stuff which MTV just can't give me.

I did misunderstand your Outkast remark. I also wasn't sure how big the difference in time between the advent of Nas and the advent Outkast was, but I do know Outkast has done more in that time.

I know MJG is from Memphis, but he recorded and moved here and was considered local because Suave Records was a local outfit. His work with Eightball is good, but he really shines on his solo album No More Glory.

Also out of everyone mentioned K-Rino was probably the best lyricist, the argument could be made by a long shot. You have to look him up, but his stuff is pretty good.

As a huge rap fan, if i'm not mistaken lol, Too Short started off in Houston a little ways back. Not much lyrical talent,;) but uh,has lyrics that tend to be noticed by both genders. Anyway...right now I'm into Dead Prez's new album, Naughty By Nature, AZ,Philly's Most Wanted, and the Neptunes. Check out " In search of..."

Cash Money is from La. [louisiana]
and to be honest. . . they ain't talking about ****
but hell no one else is either
They do make a good beat though
and some of their **** is. . interesting

Nas is ok . .. at best to me
he is NO WHERE NEAR ANDRE BEN from outkast
or even the Goodie MO-B and Big Boi

Mystical is a PHENOM . . his lyrics are interesting
and his style is great . . his beats are nice
    He too is from La.

I'm not as DEEP in the houston scene as some
but i cannot stand such weak ass blanket statements
I hear what comes on the radio . . some is good
    some is bad. . .
as for SCREW being unoriginal because they slow down
    others 'original music'
HAVE YOU NOT LISTEN TO RAP MUSIC IN THE LAST 10 YEARS!!~
Hell Erick Sermon's remake of MUSIC by Marvin Gaye
kewl . . IF ERICK SERMON WAS NOT ON IT!!1

Rap was invented for people who want to be singers but can't carry a tune to save their lives.

Nope, just telling the truth. If a rapper could sing, he or she would be a singer. Think about it.

Eminem can sing. He reminds me of a Detroit Version of Celine Dione.

If a football player could play basketball . . . . HE would

    Think about it

If a garbage man could be a CEO .. . he would

If a country singer could actually sing he'd be a pop singer *grin*

    If a writer could draw he'd be an artist. . . .

The inability to excel at one art form . . .does not discredit another

    What do mean by "Sing"?
Have you listened to an Outkast Album? They sing on a number of songs on each of their albums.
    Mos Def sings too.
Big Moe (a local artist) "sings"
    Ja Rule sings
Hell, Biz Markie sings....the list goes on....(They might not all sound good but, the same can be said for Bob Dylan or Axel Rose). Though they sing, I assure you, none would give up being an MC.
Some, because its their ART and CULTURE, others because they get paid handsomely to rhyme.
If you don't like rap/hip hop thats fine, but please don't try to discredit it or its artists, or make it out to be a "wanna be" artform. I respect your opinion, and I don't believe theres anything I can say to convince you otherwise, nor should I. But your post in a BBS Hangout thread where others were merely discussing RAPPERS they liked or disliked was unnessesary.

I never thought I would see the day that someone actually managed to brush off Nas AND call Mystical a great in the same breath.

"Whatever floats ya boat or finds ya lost remote." - Andre Ben

EM is wack to me. . . . I just really cannot feel anything he done
Nas is a very poor man's Rakim - to me by far . . overrated
Jay-z. . . Amazing folx say Cash money ain't saying anything then
bring up Jay Z who is talking about the exact same ****

I guess I'm not as big a EAST COAST jocker as some
Or just grabing on to the Flava of the Month
[or even White boy of the month]

Em maybe skilled. . .but i'm not feeling him
Same with Nas. . same with Jay Z
Jay Z has grown on me a little. . .and Nas's older stuff was decent

Hell . . since we at it. . . let's blow this topic to hell.

TUPAC IS THE GREATEST MC OF ALL TIME!!!!
    yes . .. i do beleive that
