So this company wants to interview me and so instead of booking my flights like a month ahead of time when they told me they wanted me come in for a formal interview they call me 5 or 6 days before the interview and tells me to call their travel agent and book my flight. So instead of spending 400 bucks a person they are spending over a grand a person and they have a whole bunch of people flying in for this thing. And so when I email the manager doing the recruiting he just says well everyone else is having to do the same thing. I am debating whether it makes sense to take a day off for a company that is just so disorganized and blowing money like this. It seems like so many companies now days are blowing money on the most stupid stuff and they are all asking for bail outs or laying off people crying they are poor, but I think its a bunch of BS. However when you have a monopoly on the market you don't really have behave in a very efficient manner.
As long as they are blowing money on you, and in the future your salary and benefits who cares right? I'll take that 200 dollar coffee please. I TAKE IT BLACK PEASANT! What's the job and company? If you don't mind me asking.
It could be worse. You can work for a manager that shoves and under appreciate you with fewer hours. What's the company?
Think about it this way: If they are blowing money on flights, maybe they will blow money on you? They probably hand out raises like confetti. Go for it!
Depending on the company and their travel set up, they may not actually be paying much more to fly you in last minute. And scheduling a month in advance can be a logistical nightmare if employees cancel or flake out, find other jobs in the meantime, if the interviewer has scheduling conflicts, etc.
U.S. corporate profits rise most in 25 years WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - U.S. before-tax corporate profits from current production increased at the fastest pace in more than 25 years over the past year, the Commerce Department estimated Friday. Before-tax profits increased $108.7 billion, or 8%, in the fourth quarter. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2008, profits are up 30.6%, the most since 1984. Net cash flow increased $69.1 billion in the fourth quarter, while taxes rose by $40.9 billion. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/us-corporate-profits-rise-most-in-25-years-2010-03-26 Work a little while longer and you will realize that companies can find money for ANYTHING. Only when it comes to salaries will they cry poor. As an old boss of mine used to say, "Companies love to step over a $20 to pick up a $5"
If you don't want to work for a company that is disorganized and wastes money, you might as well try to work for yourself. And then you'll find you're the same way and then you might as well stop working at all.
I was blowing $1,700 for last minute (1 hour) economy flights from the client site in Toronto back to Chicago...
I've never had travel covered for an interview. The fact that they're even paying for flights for so many candidates means that you're in an industry where spending thousands of dollars on filling one dinky job is standard operating procedure.
