I'm sick of the 80's. I'm sick of all the endless debates about 80's music and 80's TV shows. I was a teenager in the 80's and am a solid Gen X'er but my generation has become far more navel gazing about the 80's than the Baby Boomers have about the 60's. I almost feel sorry for people in their late teens and early 20's now because 20 years from now they're not going to be able to talk about how great the music of their decade is since everyone was talking about the 80's. While there certainly was a lot of good culture in the 80's there was also a lot of crap produced then. The fascination with synthesizers that started in the 70's really led to a long string of overengineered garbage that reached its height at the end of the decade in monstrosities like Milli Vinilli. While its true that electronica music continued to be popular after the 80's the amount of plasticine sounding garbage wasn't as great later on and as people got a better handle on the technology learned to use it more appropiately. Compare that to the 80's when it became popular to slap on synth beats and sounds, particularly drums, onto almost every piece of music leading to the horrible perversion of a once fine blues band like ZZ Top into the unholy mutation of 3 guys with fuzzy guitars playing blues riffs on top of Casio beats. Thankfully the fashions of the 80's haven't made a comeback and we've been spared the horror of bright red parachute pants, really big hair with over big headbands in primary colors. Thankfully the Miami Vice movie didn't bring a return of pastel jackets with sandals and no socks. And I write this as guy who's sophmore yearbook picture features me wearing a pastel jacket. If I can sum up the culture of the 80's in one word it would be "plastic." That sums up the overproduced, oversynthesized, over shininess of 80's culture. There's a lot of people who like plastic but I can do with less of it.
all I remember from the 90's are teenage angst bands from seattle and boybands of all colors from all over the states. it was a bad time for music. and the cartoons sucked, which was the worst thing frankly.
After all the stupid stuff I did in the 80s, I'm just glad I survived or didn't go to jail. Well, not for more than a night anyway.
you know what Sishir? you're too angry. I think that you need somebody to share, Share the rest of your life, Share your innermost thoughts, Know your intimate details, Someone who'll stand by your side, And give you support, And in return, Shell get your support, She will listen to you, When you want to speak, About the world you live in, And life in general, Though your views may be wrong, They may even be perverted, Shell hear you out, And wont easily be converted, To your way of thinking, In fact shell often disagree, But at the end of it all, She will understand you EDIT: man I need to give my wife a hug when I go home...
The 80's rocked, period, end of story...Who didn't like wearing brightly colored Coca-Cola shirts, girls wearing acid washed skirts, or watching MTV when it was still about music videos... You just need to suck it up...
Well if I share too much with a woman they usually run away screaming in horror. Most of the women I've dated in the last few years have been younger than me. Unfortunately for me some of them think its cool that I was a teenager in the 80's. Yeah I think I need to give your wife a hug too.
An Asian man who passes on the chance to pontificate about the role that Depeche Mode's Someboy played in your life...never thought I'd see the day I'm married to a ladyboy, I don't think you'll like that too much
I admit a lot of the stuff was crap in the 80's. But it isn't any worse than Brittney Spears, or half the crap on the radio these days. I think those kind of shallow, pop, stuff is a constant for most of the 20th century on up through today. So while that was bad, I wouldn't say it was worse than disco from the 70's, bubble-gum over sentimentality from the 60's, and so-on. Given that won't judge it too harshly on that part. I think every decade should be looked at for its contributions and underground or cutting edge scene with at least as much weight. Sadly the 80's could be split into two halves. Pre '85 it was pretty great, then started going downhill fast. I guess the downward slide started before '85 but there was still enough new stuff to hold it up that long. There was some afterward as well but it started going downhill fast. I have a nostalgic fondness for the John Hughes and other teen type movies of the time. The style of the 80's I still love, but in a humerous entertaining way as opposed to it making a great fashion statement. If I see someone wearing a Laura Ashley dress, or very preppy style, or any of that, I am always pleased. I guess my own memories from the time are very pleasant, and of course selective memory and 2 plus decades of internal embellishments of those times probably heightens my romanticizing of the period. I think there were few other times when a person(Adam Ant) could dress like a pirate, and an American Indian, make great music about Clint Eastwood, Native American spirit, pride, Blackbeard, etc.(with the Ants. The two drummers were amazing) and be seen as really cool. For that to happen without much questioning of it, something had to be going right.
