So I'm getting my wisdom teeth out today (Better late than never...literally) and if I'm going to eat anything it had to be right now, so I decided to scrounge through my pantry to find something to eat. Lo and behold what do I find but a box of grits. "Hmm...I've never had grits before, but I've always heard they suck." Normally that train of thought would discourage someone from pursuing such a meal, but there are those times where you get the urge to try something different. Now picture combining urges: You want to try something different but you also want to do your best impression of a world class chef, because for some reason, you think you have an idea that will work. Today was that day. I am a college student, so to follow the stereotype, the amount of food I have would probably struggle to feed a small child. Anyways, I throw the grits in some boiling water and I, as my roommate so eloquently put it, Emeril Lagasse'd that b****. What did I do you ask? Well first of all, grits taste like nothing. They aren't disgusting, but really, outside of their nutritional value, they aren't worth eating. So I decided to "spice" things up a bit. I mix in some mozzarella cheese for added texture, thickness, and taste, and sure enough, it works. But I was feeling extra frisky this morning, so what do I add in next? About 1/2 cup of sugar. "Oh really?" Yeah really. Pretty weird, huh? Moral of the story? Like Lucky Charms, it was magically delicious. Who would've thought? Now I know I'm not the only one to decide to mix things up a bit and make a weird culinary concoction. Share your tale as I have done, whether your creation was scrumptious or revolting, let's hear it!
When I was in college I had a Sam's Club membership for a while. During one of my shopping trips, a giant 5 lb block of mozzarella cheese caught my eye. I didn't really intend to buy it, but because I even bothered to notice it my roomate had to chime in and remark that I would never be able to finish that cheese before it went bad. So of course I bought it. For weeks I put mozzerella cheese on EVERYTHING. Sometimes I would just take big bites out of the block, but mostly I just sliced or shredded it and cooked stuff. It's amazing how many different kinds of food are made better with mozzarella.
I don't know why but I love grits. Make some scambled eggs and hot grits. Put some butter on the grits and let it melt and mix it all together with the scrambled eggs and you have a great breakfast!
A while ago, I tired experimenting to make the most delicious grilled cheese possible. Anyone have a good recipe?
Take a double cheese sandwich and put butter on both sides and drop it in a hot skillet for about a minute on each side. Serve with your favorite soup.
When I was in college, I invented the Baco, mustard and cheese sandwich. Disgusting as it may sound, everyone back then I had try it, liked it. My dad's was peanut butter and mayonaisse, which was actually quite tasty.
ciabatta bread (the one from target that you bake in your oven), mozzarella cheese, sliced tomatoes and basil & EVOO. -Bake the bread -Slice it open and put olive oil on -put cheese, tomato & basil inside (add salt if you want) -put in oven to melt cheese Best cheese sandwich ever!
Man I love me some GRITS! I used to eat it everyday when I was little, with sausage and some hot sauce.
hmmm, this makes me wonder: What percentage of college guys would eat, and like, mozzarella cheese and 1/2 cup of sugar added to shredded cardboard. And then what if you added pizza sauce to it.
Beef heart. Very lean, very cheap. Put diced heart in flour. Heat pot w/ oil (cover and med-high heat for 10 mins.) Put in heart, let brown for a few mins. Add sliced onions and a cup or two of water. Cover and let simmer on low for 2- 3 hours. Beef stew success! You can boil some noodles and add it and its amazing. Overall though, beef heart can be used in a lot of different things and it pretty much tastes like semi-chewy lean beefiness.
(1) Toast two pieces of bread to medium brown (2) Open a can of vienna sausages. Slice them in half, lengthwise and cover one slice of bread with the halves. (3) Place one slice of Kraft American cheese on top of the sausages. (4) Place remaining slice of toast on top. (5) Microwave for 35 seconds. (6) Enjoy. It's especially good if you're on a shoestring budget. (yeah - I know what you're thinking... "vienna sausages?!?! YUK!!!")
I usually go to Wal Mart and buy me a pack of boneless chicken. It's not that fancy pre-packed chicken (you know, the expensive kind), but it gets the job done. It's really inexpensive, a good $6-7, as well. On top of that, I buy a bag of frozen mixed vegetables, some pasta and some lemon pepper powder. In all, I spend roughly $10 on this and it lasts me a few days. I did this a while back and listed me almost all week. Inexpensive and good, especially if you're on a budget.
