May Allah SBT accept our fasts and forgive our sins during this holy month of Ramadan Inshallah.

Ramadan Kareem guys! Smooth sailing on the first day here, did not get hungry or thirsty at all, and did some charity for good measure :)

I feel pretty good about it, can't help but wonder as to why I do not act in the same manner all year long, and try to do at least one act of kindness towards a stranger each day that I am alive.

I guess Ramadan is more about self-reflection than anything else. And one practically half of your day is an act of worship, you tend to reflect on more things than you might like to.

Because shaytan is locked up during Ramadan, maybe.

What if I was a better person/Muslim outside of Ramadan than I am inside of Ramadan?

Also, what about non-Muslims? How come their behavior doesn't change if the devil is locked up?

Day 1 was a breeze, although being tied down at work from 5:30AM to 7PM definitely helps the time go by faster.

There's actually a whole lot of research that extended fasting can induce a general temporary sense of well being. There was a story on the subject unrelated to Ramadan on This American Life this week. There are all sorts of New Age 'gurus' who advocate a starvation diet as a path to enlightenment, and they have some very devoted followers who swear by it.

In the short term if you are really starving, a burst of energy and a positive emotional lift prevents a downward spiral whereby lack of food prevents you from having enough energy to search for food, which results in less food, which results in less energy to find food, ad infinitum.
