http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/story/410741p-347491c.html BY FRANK ISOLA DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Normally loquacious Stephon Marbury clams up when asked if Larry Brown is right for Knicks. Stephon Marbury draws final media horde of season, and calls this 'best time of my life.' Isiah Thomas already has a prospective taker for Stephon Marbury. Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune on Wednesday that his team is interested in acquiring Marbury, whom Minnesota drafted 10 years ago and traded to the Nets in 1999. However, Taylor admitted that Marbury's contract - he'll earn $60 million over the next three seasons - is a major stumbling block. "Yeah, it isn't that we couldn't use somebody like that. We certainly could with his experience, and we know him," Taylor told the newspaper. "It's that he was signed at a salary that's going to cause us problems. So it would be difficult, it would have to be one of those things where New York would have to say that they really want to get rid of the player and could help us in some financial way to do it. We wouldn't know until this summer if that would even be a possibility." The Knicks can give Minnesota a maximum of $3 million as compensation for Marbury. The only other way for the Knicks to provide salary cap relief is to take back long-term contracts. If the Wolves decides to keep Kevin Garnett, they will attempt to add veteran players like Marbury in order to placate their franchise player. Last month, both Garnett and Marbury said they are amicable to a reunion; Marbury wants Garnett to join him in New York, while Garnett wants his one-time teammate to return to the Twin Cities. According to several team sources, Isiah Thomas is committed to trading Marbury, whose skills have diminished while his reputation as a malcontent has grown appreciably. However, Marbury's trade value never has been lower; he is showing signs of breaking down and he is a point guard who makes his teammate bitter, not better. Another possibility is Allen Iverson, a player Thomas long had admired. The Sixers likely will shop him this summer. The Knicks may have to take back a number of players in order to rid themselves of Marbury. The Houston Rockets could potentially put together a package featuring Rafer Alston and others. The Clippers, who could lose Sam Cassell to free agency, also may be interested. Originally published on April 21, 2006
they already took moochie and Mo from us and now Rafer? This writer has no clue how the salary cap works. move along.
If I were GM and I was given the freedom to get 3 max players, my last pick wouldn't be Marbury. That said, the only even close senerio I can see that would work would be... Houston Trade Breakdown Outgoing Ryan Bowen Stromile Swift Rafer Alston Juwan Howard Incoming Channing Frye Stephon Marbury +Picks?
I would never propose trading for Marbury. But since we only have to get within 25% of Marbury's salary, plus $100,000 under the new CBA, the following package would work: Rafer ($3.85 million) + Swift ($5 million) + Sura ($3.5 million) + Deke ($2.0) for Marbury ($16.4 million). So its possible, but I don't see us trading for this overpaid cancer.
LOL, Marbury? I hope JVG is not that thirsty for ex-Knicks. Or he can pack his bag and back to New York to coach them. Marbury? A lottery guarantee player, LOL.
They would never give us Frye. If they're blowing the team up, they want to keep Frye there.. unless getting back a good young piece. And they're really not in this deal.
Oh I know, but that would be the only piece that fits for me to trade Rafer (And I am not a fan) for Marbury. Since Marbury makes the max, I'd need a player that can play and isn't making much money. And even then, I'd ask for picks. I guess I'm saying, I don't care for Marbury and his salary.
As soon as I saw the thread title, I knew it would be a NY Daily News article, which of course means there's a 100% chance of this NOT happening.
It will never happen. And I dont want it to happen either. The Knicks will never go anywhere until they dump Thomas. Thomas will never take back .50 on the dollar with his trades. He always insists on getting the better "star" player. He doesnt understand that that team needs good solid ROLE players to compliment some of their top level talent. Until he figures that out (which will be never) they will never be able to put together a cohesive team.
Star player huh? How about this... New York Trade Breakdown Outgoing Stephon Marbury Steve Francis Eddy Curry Channing Frye Incoming Stromile Swift Rafer Alston Ryan Bowen Kevin Garnett Troy Hudson Houston Trade Breakdown Outgoing Juwan Howard Stromile Swift Rafer Alston Ryan Bowen Incoming Stephon Marbury Channing Frye Minnesota Trade Breakdown Outgoing Kevin Garnett Troy Hudson Incoming Steve Francis Eddy Curry Juwan Howard Successful Scenario Sorry - I had to try...but NY would still have to give us some picks and even then, I'd have to think...
I would, he has had major issues, and been traded a lot, but he still scores and is a good passer. He would be a major upgrade, and playing on a team with 2 superstar players he would not be expected to carry the team. I think he would flourish. DD
hell's freaking no. Marbury makes SAR and Juwan look like Batman and Robin. Marbury is the ultimate perrenial loser. I'd take Steve back, no hesitation. We need a proven winner. Look at SAM.
You guys killed Stevie and Cat and you want Stephon who is the definition of loser!!! No thanks. I'd rather have Stevie back who busted his ass and loves H-Town!
