Maybe he will be explaining why he can't hit the broadside of a large red barn and has difficulty guarding stationary objects. I didn't like this trade from the very beginning and saw nothing last season to change my mind. Alston needs to go to the bench and backup a real starting PG. He has never impressed me as being a NBA starter. Only for a coach who thinks that forty year old Knicks are "really good."
Someone call in and tell him that you think the Rockets' biggest need is to find a starting-caliber point guard...
Rafer Alston is a good PG and a good fit on this team. No, he may not be of the calibur of a Kidd or Nash who makes others better around him. But, when he has a good team and good players around him, he plays well. People talk about his shot, but when Yao and McGrady were both healthy in Jan. & Feb., he shot 37% & 36% from the 3 respectively. That is more than adequate to keep the defense honest. He still is a guy that will get you 7-8 assists, a steal or two a game and has the ability to get inside the defense and get others good looks. I'm sorry some of you have such high standards in a point guard, but Rafer is a good fit on this team.
Regarding your Alston comments, I agree with every word. I never for a moment bought into that "better fit" garbage. In the stretch of games where Yao and TMac both played and we were 10-2, we were beating bad teams and Alston was still getting outplayed. (IOW, we were winning in spite of him not because of him). Regarding JVG/management, I take a softer approach. The fact that James would like to return and IMO there's a line of communication between the ROX and MJ speaks volumes that management realized they screwed up and know they're fortunate to be able to "re-wind" the trade.
I would like to remind everyone on this board, that we can't have all world players at every position. Jesus, we're not the 80's lakers, celtics or 50-60's celtics.
The first call in question should definitely be, "How many 3s have you taken this summer?" Anything less than 50,000 is cause for a "Trade Rafer" thread to pop up on here. I keed, I keed.
I am reasonably sure the vast majority of us know that. But there's a signifcant distinction between being competitive against the All Worlds and getting destroyed by them.
