Hey guys, I have been hearing all these commercials on the sportsradio concerning radiant barrier will lower your electricty bill by 30%. Have anyone purchased these radiant barriers? If you purchased them, can you tell me how much it cost and how big is your home? Thanks.
Just got it all installed a few weeks back. @2,700 sqf, got the spray and extra insulation, attic seal and two solar vent fans, all came in a shade under 3k. Have not yet had enough elec bills to be able to say how ambitious their 30% savings claim is though. We'll see.
I've been looking at this too. I had my old house built with radiant barrier but I have no idea how much effect it had. I'm thinking of barrier plus a solar vent fan or two for this old house because the AC is getting its ass kicked by the heat (AC tech came out last week and the AC is running fine is sized right although it's old but there seems to be too much heat in the attic that is not dissipating until late, late at night.)
I got it last summer. Got the spray radiant barrier and added about 20" of insulation to my 25-year old home (2200sq ft). The bills have gone lower, but closer to 10% ... no where near that 30% figure that they quote on the radio.
BTW, I was looking at using these fellows: http://www.aaffordableinsulators.com/monthly_specials.html anyone familiar?
I listen to Tom Tynan on the radio sometimes and he always recommends radiant barrier but advises against solar vent fans. He says they are not worth it!!
I was thinking about doing this but I've read many reviews where people said it wasn't worth it. Some even claimed to not even notice a difference at all. I have also read that this can shorten your roof life. Imo, now is not the time to do it as we are already in summer. The time to do it is when the sales are going on in spring or fall. EAS (Efficient Attic Systems) was offering half off in May. Also, if you are getting the paint, I was told you need to understand the paint they are using...cause they can scam you by using a cheaper paint product that doesn't work as well. I've seen so many varying reviews on the paint...that I just don't know what to think. It's like every situation is completely unique or something to how well it works. The evidence of these big savings is flimsy imo. I just had my roof replaced with a 30 year. At that time, I upgraded the 4 turbine vents to a larger size. So far, I have found my home to be more tolerable than it was so far this summer. I also have solar screens as well. In the end, I think you are paying more if you did it in summer than if you did it in spring or fall.
surfguy has a point. I remember adds in December for radiant barriers at much lower rates. It may be worth it to just hold off.
Just had the guy come out and sign up for the radiant barrier, 5' extra free insultation and so other stuff for $1090. Hope this works. They have 3 plans ranging from $1600-$2000....but all relatively the same....
Avery Air Conditioning. Giving you honesty above reproach. Try us, you may wish you had. We have the lowest price available, I don't care what is offered. First, Mr. Avery, I don't think you're doing a very good job convincing me if you say I may wish I had. I want someone to scare the fear of God into me and tell me I will die if I don't try you. Second, what if someone offers a lower price, is yours still lower? Third, it is okay to do your radio commercials in more than one take. You start by talking very slow and then halfway through the commercial, you realize you have only gotten through a quarter of your monologue and you increase your talking to speeds that could rival Twista. What the hell? Maybe pacing yourself would be in order? I am a man of principle and I will not be calling Avery due to his flawed marketing campaign.
