to the extent that racism can be defined as the valuing of race over other criteria, this statistc, taken from exist polls, is worth highlighting:

[rquoter]Those who said race was an important factor voted 55 percent to 44 percent in favor of Obama.[/rquoter]

So 13% of the population used racism to get him elected?

Gonna be a long 8 years for you.

that for those who said race was important, most of them voted for Obama. pretty clear that those who attempt to paint republicans as racists are missing the bigots before them.

This is a cleverly disguised "So if there's a BLACK history month how come there ain't a WHITE history month?" thread.

Lame even by basso's usual standards. Which don't exist.

Obviously race was a main reason why 98% of blacks voted for him. The under-reported story, in my opinion, is how his race shielded him from intense criticism. Nobody wanted to be the guy who attacks the guy who could be the first African American President (2nd if you count Slick Willie, as some do). There is an unspoken shame amongst many white journalists and figures in media, in dealing with blacks, as a result of the ancient wrongs of slavery. As a result, Obama got away with a lot of things that the media would not have permitted from other candidates. No one could have run for President with so weak of a resume, other than a candidate who was shielded from criticism. This was the case in 2008. Without the shield of guilt, everyone and their dog would have called bullschit on Obama's qualifications and campaign.

Additionally, he used race as a diversion in many instances, most notably to deflect attention from the Jeremiah Wright outrage with his speech on race relations.

Not obvious, and not correct. The fact that he was a democrat (and backed the policies that a huge majority of blacks have consistently supported) was the main reason why. The number of people who voted for Obama that would not have voted for Clinton (or Kerry or Gore) was minimal.

Please tell me you understand why the fuller quote supplied by pgabriel makes the part you quoted irrelevant.

This doesn't explain why blacks overwhelmingly voted for Obama over Hillary in the primary -- particularly because Hillary has done a whole heck of a lot more for the black community than Obama ever has.
