The last thread got locked, and though I understand why the first one got locked, it is unfair to lock mine as the article in questions clearly illustrated a double standard that exists and is worthy of discussion.

RM95, you said

"I've only claimed that on the whole, white people in America have never been slaves or victims of discrimination."

Tell that to the Irish who were discriminated against, or the Jewish immigrants, or the many other ethnic people who were discriminated against here in the USA, none of which are asking for reparations.

Discrimination has no color boundries, it is bad for everyone.

This article is a disgrace to all....

Discrimination is bad for everyone !!!

Look, Da, these threads always go the same way - badly and downward. Your point is noted but you are pushing something that needs not be pushed. When was the last time you saw a discrimination thread on this board go well? I'll give you a hint: never.

I'm going to leave this open just because I'm tired of locking threads, but realize that re-opening threads just because YOU want to is bad form and really freaking annoying.

Jeff,

I understand your point, but Kagy only locked the thread because it was a pissing match between 2 people and he even said to the guy who started the thread that it was an interesting topic.

If you want annoying, try getting your thread locked about a topic that you think should be discussed.

We discuss racism all the time here, yet, hardly ever does an article so clearly represent the fact that Racism is not one sided and that is the point of the discussion.

Not racism itself, but WHY it is ok for a certain group of people to say racist things and not another.

You know what I love is that a NYC Councilman makes a stupid ass comment and DaDa comes out of the woodwork to decry racism but in discussing slavery everyone just needs to get over it. Mmkay buddy... more great common sense from you.

Timing,

I agree...we should get over it.....that is my WHOLE POINT !!!!!

THANK YOU !!!!!

The article illustrates how the media makes a big deal out of one side of the argument yet ignores the other.....

I think both sides are ludicrous.

To say 'racism works both ways' is almost like trying to make an excuse, or to find some way to water down the problem.

I know that's not what you are trying to do, Da, but you have to understand that's what you are conveying.

Racism is bad? That's easy. The effects of racism and descrimination on different ethnic backgrounds in the history of this country? That's hard. And that's why something should be studied.

Do I believe in the whole 'reparations' angle? I don't know. I need facts, I need stats, I need details.

But trying to point to racism as something to compare with another type of racism, just to prove that one side didn't have it 'as bad' as another, or 'deserves' something less, gets everyone nowhere.

Yeah, and this isn't going to turn into another pissing match between people. Prove me wrong. I dare you.

When this thread hits 70 or 80 posts and has decended into complete and utter stupidty, I'll just drop back in and say, "What a surprise."

Best of luck.

Can someone please point to any post ever made on this BBS where someone said that only white people can be racist?

Unfortunately, in our country's history, white people are one of, if not the only race not to be victims of widespread racism and discrimination. I've heard racism from both sides, but much more from white people. Most of the racism I've heard from minorities is in direct response to racism from white people. Not saying that's right, but that's what my experiences have shown.

Your comparisons are apples and oranges. You're just ranting about to get attention like you always do in these threads. You're adding nothing here other than to further illustrate that you have no grasp on what racism has meant to minorities in this country.

Are the Chinese gonna get anything back for their ancestors' alleged cruel treatment when they were building the railroads? I may wanna get in on some of that. ;)

Racism is generally pointless and groundless hate right?
Hate is generally negativity, right?
If you dislike the concept of racism, then dislike the concept of negativity; because the former is but a stem of the latter.
I'm sure we all agree here that racism sucks. So we agree! That's grounds for positivity, now lets leave all this negativity behind before we wind up defeating our purpose.

I love you guys, even you green and purple people...so
GET ALONG!!!!!

Eureka !!!

Timing, I have seen the light.......oh man, how could I have missed it all these years......oh...wait a minute....it wasn't the light after all it was simply a bit of fuzz in my eyes....ah that's better.

Yep, can see much more clearly now.....let's see what where you talking about again.....racism and minorities.

Yes, that is it......I agree it is stupid to be racist.

As for what it means to minorities...I guess it means that the minute we can all look in the mirror and quit talking about skin color and who has skin the color of the majority or skin the color of the minority, then we will have something. Until then, I guess I will keep saying that people of all ethnicity have a GREAT chance to improve their station in this country, but only if they apply themselves.

Whining about how your ancestors were treated over 135 years ago is at the least bad form.

Everytime I think of slavery, I get sick to my stomach.

That's something we should never "get over".

You know what man, that's simplistic horse****. You must live in Pleasantville, are you in color yet?

How about whining about stupid remarks in the press and comparing that to discussions on slavery... where does that rank on the stupidity meter?

True RM95, that warrants an eternity's worth of remorse. But me personally, when I get sick to my stomach I take some Pepto Bismol because I don't like the feeling. Either that or I don't eat whatever I ate that spawned that feeling. By the same sense, I prefer to move on from the ignorance and hatred that was slavery in stead of betraying my outlook on the subject by hating back. We can't fight fire with fire in this case, we can't oppose hate with hate.

RM95,

Agreed it was terrible, but mankind has had slaves for over 99% of it's existance, there are still slaves in the world.

We are slowly eradicating it, THANK GOD !!

My point is that we should not accept racism by ANY person.

And here I was thinking that the angry white male was just a myth ...

What I've never understood is why the people who have the most comfortable lives about are often the ones who get angriest about affirmative action, reverse racism, reparations and the like.

Da, from what I've read, you have a fantastic life -- you own your own successful company and you have a family you love. What is there to be so angry about? Has affirmative action somehow kept you from having the life you really want? I can't imagine how things could be much better for you.

I think African Americans are just looking for an opportunity to enjoy the wonderful things that you take for granted every day. Some of them may think that can be achieved through affirmative action programs or slavery reparations. I'm not sure if those are the roads to equality and happiness and, frankly, I'm not interested in debating that. I'm just curious why their pursuit of happiness causes you so much misery.

And again, please show me where anyone on this board ever said that racism should be accpeted by ANY person.
