As in the case of most newspapers today, there is an online version where readers can make comments. You guys really ought to look at some of the things mentioned on the Chron.com, about Obama. The people down here can turn any subject about him and its kind of scary and funny at the same time.

But another trend on their that's really just sad is comments about race. There is a story on their right now about a hate crime, the comments had to be taken down. Last week there was a shooting at a benefit concert at Texas Southern University (for those that don't know a black college) and the comment section had to be taken down off that also.

I really don't want to get into those stories specifically, but I just find it ridiculous that some people don't accept how race is still a large factor in this society in people's minds. I've been avoiding making the comment in the Gates thread because i didn't want to add to the length, but I find it hilarious that the thread is damn near nine hundred posts long with people saying race is a non factor. rather it was in the gates arrest or not, its certainly an issue people like to discuss.

The comment sections on all paper websites are outlandish. Even USA Today has them and, while not as bad as the Chronicle, they are still pretty wacky.

It's a combination of two things:
    1. Newspapers desperately trying to keep up in the digital age and being very bad at it. After all, seeing such uninformed garbage really does distract from the journalistic quality of an article. I know that in this era it's presumed that there must be a two-way dialogue between message creator and recipient, but they do a horrible job of civilizing it.
    2. People using the Interwebs who may not know that forums and BBS sties exist. If you're going onto the Chronicle website to get your trolling fun, you must not know how large the Internet actually is.

I used to read the comments when I read stories on their website.....but reading that much ignorance by the tinhat brigade got to be painful after a while....now I dont bother.

Reading some of those comments.....especially ones aimed at minorities...makes me ashamed to be from the same state as those backwardass jackasses.

funnily enough....or maybe not....It seems very telling that the most vile remarks are ones attached to a righty viewpoint. Ive said many times I consider both parties a bunch of morons....but you dont see the venom and ignorance coming from the left like I do from the right. I have a friend of mine that is conservative...he forwards me stuff all the time he gets in his email, and Im about to the point to ask him to take me out of his contact list cause that crap frankly repulses me with its bigotry.

Read the comments any time there is a story on Chron.com about religion, evolution, prayer in school etc.

The responses are awesome. You really have to make it a full time job to be as ignorant as most of the people that post on those. Seriously, to graduate high school yet still not know a thing about science or civics takes a real effort.

My girlfriend and I are seriously thinking of picking up and moving. The sheer collective stupidity of Houston is staggering and it's starting to make both of us hate people.

Those of you upset at Houston may want to read the comment section of other papers. The loonies post everywhere. It's absolute garbage. Hard to imagine these dumbasses were able to read the actual articles.

It's not just the Chronicle or Houston. I live in Baltimore. Check out the Sun message board, or the message board for the main Philly paper. They are both racist cesspools.

For some reason, Mrs. rimrocker comments a bit on BBS stories. Those comment threads are great for a basic understanding of how the world views us and we view the world. Lots of fairly disgusting comments offered up by Americans.

The Chron cracks me up. They hire a bunch of liberal writers for a conservative audience. No wonder they are losing money.

Sorry Chron, this isn't San Fran (thank god).

not surprising that you fell back on a typical Republican punching bag (p.s. SF is an awesome city)

Safeway Select, what does this have to do with the topic of this thread?

Are you saying that the Chronicle comments are full racist d-bags because most of the Chronicle readers are conservative?

    Interesting.

If you're seriously going to pack up and move out of a city because of a bunch of totally anonymous posters on a newspaper website....well, Houston is probably better off without you.

As others have mentioned, this happens with every online newspaper with a comment section.

yeah. i read some comments about the man who was killed with an ax yesterday, and they weren't pleasant at all. i can only hope they were just some punk kids being dumbasses, but even then it's rather disturbing. I promise if it was a white women, the comments would be much different, but that's just the way it is. racism will never die. you just have to accept that.

But what i dont accept is people cant accept that some things are just flat out racist. This is a major problem with the Republican party. They're quick to say things aren't racist, but then even quicker to cry reverse racism.

That's just ridiculous. Houston? you're not talkin about Tomball or Dickinson or League City, but Houston? I think people in Houston are probably the friendliest people. Every city has their idiots, but Houston is very friendly...much friendly than the north (I say this as a minority)

Race is an issue and it will always be an issue because we as people make it an issue.

To paraphrase Morgan Freeman: I'm going to stop calling referring to white people as white and I am going to ask that they stop referring to me as a black man.

It's a great idea but one that will never ever be fuly embraced.
