Singer-actor Jerry Reed dies at the age of 71

    By JOHN GEROME

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Jerry Reed, a singer who appeared in the "Smokey and the Bandit" movies, has died of complications from emphysema at age 71, his longtime booking agent said Tuesday.

Carrie Moore-Reed, who is no relation to the star, said Reed died early Monday morning.

Reed was a gifted guitarist who later became a songwriter, singer and actor.

As a singer in the 1970s and early 1980s, he had a string of hits that included "Amos Moses,""When You're Hot, You're Hot,""East Bound and Down," and "The Bird."

In the mid-1970s, he began acting in movies such as "Smokey and the Bandit" with Burt Reynolds, "Gator""Hot Stuff" and "High-Ballin'."

From someone who grew up in the "Smokey and the Bandit" era (when it was all the rage), I did take notice to this and I say "he will be missed".

I remember him from "Smokey and the Bandit" for sure. More recently they put "When You're Hot, You're Hot" on the GTA: San Andreas soundtrack.

i just found about this today and I am saddened. I had just watch again Smokey and the Bandit last saturday since it was on TV.

I love that movie (sequels not as much) but he will be sorely missed.

loved him in waterboy as well.

I drove my friends crazy in elementary school singing East bound and Down all the time.

The guy was an AMAZING guitarist. I mean unreal. I'm a huge fan of his music.

Chet Atkins often said Jerry Reed was a better player than he was. A great character, a musician's musician, and a damn funny guy.
