http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2008088335_webhunter02m.html?syndication=rss A woman hiking on Sauk Mountain near Rockport was shot and killed Saturday morning by a boy who was hunting for a bear, Skagit County deputies said. The 54-year-old woman, from Oso, in unincorporated Snohomish County, was hiking with a friend and stopped on the trail to put something in her backpack. The boy, from near Concrete, mistook the woman for a bear and fired one shot, according to the Skagit County Sheriff's Office. After being alerted at about 10:30 a.m., search and rescue teams found the woman's body in steep terrain. The boy was accompanied by at least one adult, deputies said. The Skagit County Sheriff's Office and an officer from the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife are investigating.
not trying to be insensitive, but this "boy" must be a damn good shooter to "think" he sees a bear, fires ONE shot, and kills what he shot at. I mean IMO, if he thought it was a BEAR would he not fire more bullets then just one?
Hunting bear in the north is pretty common. I have had roasted bear before and it is pretty good (tasted like pot roast wit ha little gamier flavor).
I mean, come on, I can't believe it's taken this long for anyone to post this. We're barely done with Austin Powers impersonations on this board.
It's sad that she got shot, but the thread title was very very creative. I can't say I didn't laugh at first, but when I read the article I felt sorry for the lady. Props to Lil Pun (no pun intended)...
Last I checked, rifles have these things called scopes you look through and identify your target with...before you shoot. I take it he was just shooting at movement and hadn't actually identified the target he was shooting at. People don't look like bears...unless she was decked out in all brown or black, wearing a furry hat, and making growling noises. I don't get how the mistake could be made. I think its partially due to overeagerness to shoot at something before the target is actually identified. I mean...you are in the woods hunting. You don't expect other people to come walking along into your sights most of the time. But, the last thing I would do is be hiking on a trail in a forest where hunting is allowed and also going on. That's asking for trouble.
Bear are hunted pretty heavily here in Arkansas especially in the west/northwest portion. Believe it or not, bear meat is eaten too although most people hunt it for sport. That being said, I don't know about anybody else here who hunts but I was always taught to know EXACTLY what you are shooting at before you pull the trigger. There was a boy in southern Arkansas who killed his dad doing this same thing.
Surely the boy, the accompanying adult, or both, will suffer some kind of potential severe punishment. accident or not, you can't just shoot someone and say "whoops, my bad!"
