Bob Denver of 'Gilligan's Island' dies at 70

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Bob Denver, whose portrayal of goofy first mate Gilligan on the 1960s television show "Gilligan's Island" made him an iconic figure to generations of TV viewers, has died, his agent confirmed Tuesday. He was 70.

Denver, who underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year, died Friday at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Carolina, according to agent Mike Eisenstadt.

Denver's death was first reported by "Entertainment Tonight."

Denver also played the title character's beatnik pal, Maynard G. Krebs, on TV's "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis."

I actually liked that role better than Gilligan. His reaction to the word "work"(even when he said it himself) was classic.

Hmmm, was the bypass not successful? Why did he die? Usually, with the advances in heart surgery, bypasses can be done in the doctors' sleep.

    Well, rest in peace Gilligan.

Sad. Gilligan's Island is still one of my favorite tv shows of all time. I could watch re-runs of that forever. :)

Here's a fact. Many years ago in a city far, far away my boss was dating Mary Ann. He still may be as far as I know.

    Gilligan's name

Gilligan's full name has been a subject of debate among fans of the series for decades. Officially it was never revealed, nor was it ever said for certain whether Gilligan was his first or last name. Bob Denver once conjectured that the character's full name was Willy Gilligan and some sources have taken this as official confirmation. This comes from a claim by Bob Denver on a talk show that Sherwood Schwartz once mentioned that Gilligan had ever needed another name it would be "Willie". There is no evidence, however, other than Denver's claim, that Schwartz ever made this statement.

In one episode of the series, The Professor is heard to possibly give a last name for Gilligan. When introducing him to a native girl, The Professor says "Gilligan ... " adding, as the girl looks on uncomprehendingly, "...Hohople", which causes her to laugh. One website (see link below) suggests that this episode confirms that the character's full name is Gilligan Hohople; however, it can also be suggested that The Professor was simply translating the name Gilligan into the woman's language, although this is unlikely, since names are rarely translated from one language to another.

The website Snopes.com (http://www.snopes.com) has explained that the "Hohople" reference is the Professor asking the girl if she finds Gilligan handsome, which also is unlikely since there is no context in the scene for the Professor to ask such a question. The Professor's tone of voice, however, as he says "Hohople" to her, does seem to be that of asking a question, rather than making or completing a statement, whatever the particular question may have been. Indeed, he pauses and says, "uh", between "Gilligan" and "Hohople", very much like one would would pause when trying to think of exactly what one is going to say next.

For those who believe he was giving Gilligan's full name, this could be taken to mean that he was simply having momentary trouble remembering what Gilligan's last name was. However, one would tend to doubt that someone with the Professor's encycolopedic mind would forget the name of one of only six people with whom he spends every single day of his life. Indeed, when taken together with the fact that his tone of voice seems to indicate he's asking the woman a question, his pause and "uh" would seem much more likely to be caused by his taking a moment to try to think what the correct words were, in the woman's native language, to ask her whatever it was he wanted to ask her.

When viewing the Slave Girl episode in its entirety, some people have noted strange editing during and near this scene, perhaps indicating that the broadcast version of the scene omits dialogue that might have given the Professor's words a clearer context and meaning.

I heard(radio) that He died of complications from the treatment he was receiving for his cancer. Didn't elaborate further.

The surviving cast is getting smaller, and smaller. I know that Mary Ann, and Ginger are still with us, not sure about the Professor. Everyone else is gone.

Some trivia: If you see some of the earliest shows you'll notice that in the theme song at the end it goes ....."the movie star........and the rest, are here on Gilligan's Isle", leaving out two of the character's names. The show's producers were not going to change it until Bob(who was the star) demanded it so everyone could get equal billing in the theme. Thus the phrase "the rest" was changed to "the professor and Mary Ann".

After the pilot, and the first few shows it was decided that it would be too expensive to film on location(South Pacific) so they built a "lagoon" set at the studio. Some of the cast said that they would leave the water in for months at a time between changes, and that it sometimes got so dirty that it would be almost black, and nobody wanted to go in it. Yuch!

Also Ginger(Tina Louise) wanted out of her contract not long after the show began because her agent had told her that she would be the star of the show instead of just 1 of 7. The producer told her Tina, the fact that the show was called "Gilligans Island" should have told you something. LOL.

In retrospect it might have been better because most of them were "typecast" as their characters after that, and I don't think any of them had much more than small parts here, and there afterwards.

It wouldn't have been so bad except for the fact that none of the cast received/es royalties for the reruns of the show. All they got was whatever salary they were contracted for those few years of filming. It's only the producers that have gotten rich off the reruns. Just imagine if they got even a dollar for every time the show ran somewhere in the world.

    R.I.P. Bob.

Gilligan will live on fondly in our memories.

Faos, your boss was/is a lucky man. I was always a "Mary Ann" guy myself.

Considering how much they don't/didn't like one another, that'd be tough to believe. In interviews (books?), he talked about how she'd always be having sex in her dressing room, though. I don't think she appreciated that much.
