I wouldn't call this the "feel good" story of the day.

R&B Singer Gouges Out Eye After Suicide Attempt

    Wed Feb 2, 2005 07:19 PM ET

    By Gail Mitchell

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Following a suicide attempt, R&B singer Houston has gouged out his eye while on an overseas performance junket.

A brief statement was released Wednesday by his Capitol Records label, saying only, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Houston during this tragic time."

According to sources, the singer first attempted to jump out of a London hotel window last Thursday. Prevented from doing so by his security staff, Houston was locked in his room, at which time the injury occurred. No additional details as to his current condition or whereabouts have been disclosed.

Featured in a McDonald's commercial, Houston's 2004 hit single "I Like That" peaked at No. 11 on the Hot 100 singles chart. The song also featured Chingy, Nate Dogg and I-20.

Houston's debut album, "It's Already Written," has sold 208,000 units to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan, having peaked at No. 14 on The Billboard 200.

No. He had one mid-sized hit that was featured in a McDonald's commercial.

Some people just don't keep an eye out for what fame can do.

I can't say I've ever heard of this guy or his music, but... how sad. How messed up do you have to be to do a thing like that to yourself. Imagine being that out of control, and then having to live with the consequences even if you do get yourself back together.

    :(

    Dear God . . .

I'd seen his album at Target before, but I didn't really know anything about him. This is really pretty tragic. Gouging your eyes out must be incredibly painful and just a terrible experience. I can't even imagine why someone would do such a thing.

I'd say this is probably one of the worst things someone can do to one's self. If he cut off a hand, that sucks but he can move on from that. Had he stabbed himself or been shot or whatever, those things can heal. But this is something that can't be undone, and the consequences are enormous. If he wanted to kill himself before, he likely REALLY wants to do it now.

    Where is there any beauty
For me to see? Where loveliness
    Of sight or sound? Away!
    Lead me quickly away
Out of this land. I am lost,
Hated of gods, no man so damned.

yeah, I Like That was a pretty big hit. and yes, gouging an eye out is about as bad as it gets.

and that movie is just weird (and it was the first thing i thought of when reading this). when the thing moves at the end after the eyeball falls off, that's just wrong. very wrong.

That's what I was thinking. It makes me wonder, you gouge out one of your eyes and go through all that pain and suffering, then you still have it in you to get rid of the other one.

I know some people mentioned drugs, but I didn't see anywhere in the article that it said that. I just want to know why he would want to jump out of a window, and then do this.

Will religious groups, and concerned parents start burning classic Greek literature, and plays now, because it is obviously a dangerous influence?

How long before he hears, "Houston, you have a problem."?
