I'm a fan of McCallum's so I'm really taken aback by this....

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/writers/jack_mccallum/03/31/fix.ups/1.html

His "advice" to the Cleveland Cavaliers to improve this year....

    • Build a two-pronged offense that caters not only to James, but also to center Zydrunas Ilgauskas. How many teams have as good an outside-inside combination as Cleveland? Miami with Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O'Neal, obviously, and San Antonio with Tony Parker/Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan. But no one else.

Perhaps LeBron realizes it, but he should give thanks every day that he has a good center to complement him.

    UMMM--How about T-Mac and Yao....

    Pure Ignorance.

Is there a way we could reply to Jack McCallum and let him know what a fool he is?

Maybe he wrote that after reading the MSNBC article about the NBA's top duos. ;)

I'm sure it just slipped his mind. I don't know why we get so ticked about what different writers say about the Rockets. If someone forgets TMac and Yao, it's annoying and makes him seem uninformed, or at least poorly-edited. But in the end, we know what we have, and we'll see how far it takes us this year.

But that's just to get answered in one of those stupid fan question things. He'd probably see it, at least.

yknow, its kind of been a league wide thing, the rox have been under the radar the whole season (the mavs too). look at us, middle of the pack, everyone is looking at the sonics who are overachieving, the spurs who are the most consistent and the suns who are also overachieving, and then Miami is playing great. As for us, we're playing better than expected but not making enough noise to be noticed. Not necessarily a bad thing...

The Cavs have tried to build around Zeke. His yearly injuries have killed GMs and coaches who bought the plan. His numbers in Feb were stellar, but the giant looks like he's getting tired and broken down.

People complain about Yao's stamina, but he's not a genetic anamoly like Zeke is. Any comparison between the two on consistency is way off.

Illgauskas, barring injuries, is better than Yao, and TMac vs. LeBron is up for debate, so I agree with him.

He can argue that TMac belongs to the front court because he plays at small forward.

it doesn't matter he said inside outside combo. I tend to think Tmac is more of the outside than the inside even though he plays SF. Anyway, it used to be big news, but not any more. Wait till we make some noise in the playoffs (touchwood), then we'll gain some respect.

Does EVERY article that makes reference to a good center have to mention Yao? Does the same apply for T-Mac?

Goodness - get over it. The Rockets are lurking - they are not the best team in either conference (gee... maybe that's what Shaq/Wade and Duncan/Parker/Ginobili have in common), and I think that's what McCallum was getting at... How the Cavs can become the best team in the East and go to the Finals.

I am really dissapointed to hear that a Rox fan like you is a fan of McCallum. What prompted that?

This guy has never been good in terms of balance, prudence and knowledge-ability since I have been reading his pieces. He as well as folks like Dupree and Chad Ford are among the worst journalists I know.

    Actually, no.

He wasn't talking about best teams in either conference. Rather, he was referring to inside-outside duos.

I find it hard to believe that McGrady/Yao could possibly be worse than James/Ilgauskas, given the records of the two different teams despite the fact that the Rockets play in a more difficult division and conference.

    It's a preposterous exclusion.
