Quotas

    Are quotas actually legal any more? Do employers have to hire a certain number of black people, white people, hispanic people, etc. ? I have always wondered but am not sure. I have always had the belief that employers had to be EOE (Equal Opportunity Employers) but not actually have quaotas. Do they exist?

    I am pretty sure that quotas were ruled to be illegal.

    Yeah but I need to know for sure because when having a discussion the other day white woman told me that black people DO have chips on their shoulders for what SOME white people have done in the past. I told her that some white people have chips on their shoulders for what black people have done and I gave the example that some white people only think black people get hired because they are black. She said well that's true because quotas have been set.

    Now I thought quotas were illegal now like I said in my previous post but am I wrong?

    I'm pretty sure they are not legal. There are probably "informal" type quotas, where companies try to have a certain percentage of minorities. But if they were hard quotas, and someone found out, they could get sued bigtime.

    Quotas are illegal, but occur many times in practice. I have seen it happen plenty at the firm I work for. When our new recruits start looking "too white and asian", we go get some "under represented" minorities. It happens, folks. Just not legally.

    Unfortunately you are correct. In order to correct this, you must end affirmative action. Plain and simple. This in my opinion in the worst part of affirmative action, that the qualified minorities get looked down upon due to the unqualified ones. There are many qualified minorities and they shouldn't have to deal with this stigma. They should be the ones campaigning loudest against AA, because they're the ones that suffer.

    I know exactly what you are talking about. Being both Asian and White I guess I get the double-shaft on that deal. :D People should be evaluated strictly on their qualifications for their job. Race should not play any role at all in the hiring process. If we seek a color-blind society, we really need to get rid of these preferences.
