Let's assume for the moment that Olajuwon leaves here after this season and we are unable to sign Webber but we re-sign Taylor and Anderson and maybe pick up a solid defensive player in the frontcourt (Marc Jackson?) but don't re-sign Olajuwon. Now, do you consier the failure to make the deal with Toronto or a potential deal with Vancouver (if that were possible) a mistake? We end up left with cap space and the players we could get with or without Olajuwon's cap room. Would it have been better to make the move(s) or just to bite the bullet and let Olajuwon be a free agent? ------------------ Me fail English? That's unpossible.
I would just bite the bullet and let Olajuwon be a free agent. ------------------ "Break off the block like Maurice Green" --- Steve Francis President of the Moochie Norris fan club.
The Warriors have the right to match any offer that Marc Jackson gets, so he most likely is not going anywhere. Bite the bullet ------------------ When we tire of well-worn ways, we seek for new. hindsight wins. If they win Webber, they're geniuses. If they win Anderson and Taylor, they're fools. If you're referring to the Toronto trade of a few years ago, then the Rockets clearly made a mistake, IMO. They could have at least dragged Dream's reputation through the mud before getting the brunt of Robertson and Dream's pr. ------------------ We're going to stay together until something happens, if something happens. - Sidney Lowe on Shareef's career in Vancouver.

Time Tunnel was a great show back in the day. Bite the bullet. Reeves + SAR isn't that great a deal and Time Tunnel was just a TV show, so the Toronto thing can't be done over again. The most the Warriors can match for Marc Jackson is up to whatever the mid level exception is (should be about 4.2 mil). Jeff, What draft choices does it cost the Rockets in your hypothetical scenario? Can't go any higher than 2 1st rounders + Dream and the Rockets would have to take some extra salary back in the deal because of a sizable gap between Dream $$$ and SAR $$$. I still believe it's in our best interest to stay as far below the cap as possible, and to avoid the curse of being over the cap with no chance of escape. We don't want to be the Washington Wizards... ------------------ "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned Lies, and STATISTICS..." - Mark Twain -
This is a very hard question to answer Jeff. While Shareef would improve these team tremendously since he would fit the team perfectly and really help on the boards. However, if we did that it would mean that would no longer have Taylor to start at power forward or Shandon at the 3. Only way I would want Hakeem traded to Vancouver would be if he truely wanted to go there. If Vancouver were to trade Shareef and scrubs who's contracts expired next year, I think that would be a done deal. Don't think they have that option though. ------------------ http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/houstonrockets2000
I'd take the SAR deal with or without Reeves, though I'd prefer without. ------------------ "He was under more balls than a midget hooker."-Bobby Hill visit www.swirve.com, coming January 20th, the top 10 films of 2000! and, http://www.geocities.com/clutch34_2000 for great Rocket insight by some of your fellow BBS posters!
What was the Toronto trade exactly again. ------------------ The next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if someone asks me why i didn't get more meat, ill just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where ive hidden it. Good magic trick, huh?
I dont want shareef here if it includes reeves. He is the kind of player that comes back to haunt you when you want to sign a quality free agent down the road. I dont care if people on this BBS dont like Cato, the fact is he's got something you cant teach, height. And love him or hate him, the rockets would be a better team with him. ------------------
5th and 12th pick in the draft(Bender and the foreign center, although we could have gotten with those picks andre miller and shawn marion) plus doug christie and kevin willis too if I'm correct.Right? ------------------ La vida es una experiencia unica, aburrirse es un pecado.
Interesting speculation, Jeff. Given the choice of Abdur-Rahim or Marc Jackson, I'd go with Rahim. Jackson isn't a good defensive player, BTW. But he is a pretty good shooter/rebounder from what I hear. And I see your point, esp. since there are some good defenders who could be out there from what I hear. Either way if I am going to spend the cap money I want an All-Star caliber player, not an unproven commodity. I regret that we didn't make the Toronto deal, even though I was against it at the time. What was my reasoning then? Something about loyalty I think... ------------------ I am Jack's utter lack of surprise. www.clutchtown.com
I believe the Toronto trade was Doug Christie and the number 5 and 12 picks in the draft. If the Rockets were to keep Hakkem the rest of the season, with the cap romm could we sign C-Webb and Marc Jackson and still have enough money to sign Shandon? If so our line-up would be pretty tough PG-Steve/Moochie SG-Cat/SA SF-SA/Draft pick/Langhi PF-C-weeb/KT C-Jackson/Cato/Collier ------------------

Speculation like this is ridiculous. The point is, the Rockets are known for being a classy franchise. Good coaching, good management, and good fans. Why else do you think Barkley, Drexler, Mo, Shandon, Quitten, etc. wanted to come here? Not only would trading Dream have been a PR disaster, we would not have been able to sign Mo and Shandon. They would have ben less attracted to the franchise. We would look like the Knicks who ran Ewing out of town. It's about loyalty. Other players and potential free agents take notice of such things. Additionally, Rudy would've definitely picked Szcerbiak with the pick. No one expected Marion to bust out like he has. ------------------ "Oh No..." -Bill Walton in 97 just before Stockton's buzzer beater
