no, its not "which is better" thread :p

I recently got Dish Network a few weeks back, and they want to charge me an extra $10 a month because I don't have the receiver hooked up to my phone line. The box in the living room is pretty far from the nearest phone jack, and the tech that installed it said there is way to connect it wirelessly. Talked to people at Geek Squad and Fry's and they think I'm trying to network it to my router, which I'm not, morons. Anyways, do any you know if there is a way to connect a satellite receiver wirelessly?

    Thanks in advance

I have a question about satellite as well, similar to the one posted in this thread. I am going to get DirecTV for NFL Sunday Ticket but I want to keep my Internet through SuddenLink Cable. Is it true that if you have satellite services you cannot get cable services?

Never heard of anyone being denied one service because of having the other--we have both Directv and the very basic cable service
About the worse that should happen is one of them will call more often to get you to have both services with their one company

Tell them if they want to charge you an extra $10 month then you are canceling the service and going with DirecTV. I haven't had a phone line hooked up to my DirecTV system in over 3 years. It's not necessary so its stupid for them to charge you.

Dave, you've come to the right place! :D

Same thing happened to me when I signed up with Dish about a year ago. Go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get a GE wireless phone jack. It'll run you about $50. I use one for my Dish...phone jack is in the kitchen and the TV is in the den. Works like a dream.

Dish gives a discount when certain receivers are connected to a phoneline. If you decide not to have it plugged in, you will just be charged the normal price.

I was at the DirecTV site making my selections. I chose 2 DVRs and 2 regular receivers. There was a 3 lease fee for the receivers. Is that a one time charge or will that occur every month? I saw that after the special ends, DVR charges will be $5.99 per month but I never saw anything on regular receivers. So is this a one time charge or monthly?

I'm pretty sure that is a one time charge. That's weird though, I thought they always gave regular receivers for free. I know I've never paid for one.

And you won't have any trouble having cable internet and DirecTV. I've had both for several years.

OK, as me and my girlfriend were clicking through the online setup and order method, when we get to checkout it says we ordered the Premier package with NFL Sunday Ticket but the package has no locals. I live in Jonesboro, AR and we have a local ABC station (KAIT) but we get are other stations from other cities. We get two NBC and CBS stations, 1 each from Memphis and 1 each from Little Rock.

Does this mean I cannot get an ABC, NBC, CBS, or other stations?

this may be too late, but if you still need one then call a few satellite installers and often they sell them to you much cheaper. i got one for $30 that on dish's website was $45 at the time.

also the reason they do this is not only so you can use some of their features (online pay-per-view ordering, account balance, etc) - but mostly its to prevent fraud. for example you and a neighbor splitting one dish satellite by running a wire to the next house. by making you keep the receiver wired up they can make sure everyone is on the same phone line.

Dave2K, if they charge you more money for NOT hooking up the phone line, that sounds like extorsion, man. I don't have DISH, but that seems pretty absurd. I know DirecTV doesn't charge if you don't connect to a phone line. What's the deal with DISH? :(
Dude. You ask too many questions, man. :p I kid. I kid.

Hey, if you're in a certain county or zip code, you can choose the city's "local" stations to go to your satellite, and they will program them in there for you. When you go through the programming choices, you will get this in the form for you to choose. Just make sure you tell them what county or ZIP you're in. I live in a city that spans two counties, so that's weird for me, and I choose with the county where I live.

As far as the receivers are concerned, you get ONE for free monthly, and they will charge you for the other. If you have FOUR, you will get a monthly charge for the other three. I think they will make the DVR'd one free and you will pay a monthly fee for the other DVR receiver and the other two regular receivers. Does that make sense?

I have 3 receivers and am paying for only 2 monthly. I don't have DVR or HD from DirecTV.

Hope this helps, SeƱor Pun.
