Personally, I see nothing wrong with them. They are in Texas. They have the MVP who emphasizes fundamentals. Fundamentals are something the Rockets desperately need. They have some players whom I would like to see playing for the Rockets, namely guys like Ginobili and Parker. The people of central Texas are mostly good people, I have been there. San Antonio is not a **** town, contrary to what some of you people think. So, I would like a straightforward answer: Why the disdain for the Spurs, because I am pulling for them to win the title.
Cuz Spurs will be the biggest road block for the Rockets in the upcoming decade! Cuz Duncan will be Yao's main rivalry for dominant big man for the decade. So why not start the hating early?
What could be better than having a good ol' Texas rivalry renewed with respect for one another? The team we should all hate is the lackers.
i've gotta go, and assuming this thread is still going tomorrow, i'll expand on this answer, but for now i'll give you a quick answer: live in san antonio and live in houston. after doing such, you will see that the fans are just fundamentally different. both are homers, but houston fans actually have an appreciation for other teams and a humility about their attributes. san antonio fans tend to have little to no appreciation for any other team or player and - despite bragging about their "classy" players - are the least classy bunch of arrogant assholes you ever want to meet. if it were not for the fans - well, and david robinson as a player - i could probably like the spurs. but after living in san antonio and being around the fans, it's just inconceivable. do you know that in ~10 years of living in san antonio, i have NEVER heard a san antonio fan say (after a loss) that "the (other team) was just better than us" or "(player x) just abused us tonight"? it's always the refs fault or the spurs just gave it away or some crap that avoids the fact that nba teams are legitimately capable of beating each other without help from referees or poor play from your players. it's disgusting. i could go on...and i probably will tomorrow. for now...**** the *spurs.
I see the following things wrong with them, for starters: They are in Texas. They have the MVP who emphasizes fundamentals. Fundamentals are something the Rockets desperately need. They have some players whom I would like to see playing for the Rockets, namely guys like Ginobili and Parker. The people of central Texas are mostly good people, I have been there. San Antonio is a **** town
Are you kidding? I challenge you to find a bigger piece of crap than the place we call downtown Houston. And that is not an opinion, that is a FACT.
If you are talking about last night's incident, he was just trying to 1. defend his players and 2. get his team a little more fire. It's the lackers who are the true assholes/whiners.
And about "not giving the other team enough credit", I think that is bogus also. I started going on some of their boards (WOAI's board primarily) before the Phoenix series (I follow the suns very closely as well as the rockets), and there was concern in the air there because they knew the suns were a good team. So about "not giving teams enough credit", I don't buy it.
Fact? Where are you getting these 'facts' from, the holy San Antonio archives? SA has the riverwalk, but don't tell me they don't have crappy parts of town...they're just like any other city, its not camelot, jerky.
Take a ride into downtown Houston sometime bud. There's construction, there's bumpy roadways, it's just a crappy part of town. I wish Lee Brown would have the incentive to fix these things.
I've lived in SA & HOuston & SA has far more style. Houston is little more than a big sweaty parking lot. A least SA hasn't torn down everything older than 40 years & built a strip mall over it. .... That said Spurs fans are a little less critical of the game & the business of the game (only Lakers & Suns fans have I ever noticed to be worse at this) I remember seeing a game in SA & the home crowd booing JR Reid & Vinnie Del Negro when they were playing for the Bucks. This was 2000 a year after their championship & the guy in front of us started heckling them saying they were "wanna be champions". It was so weird. Those guys were there for years, played hard & were traded by the Spurs. They didn't demand big contracts or force a trade. Not that either one of them were great players, but the got the most of their abilities. Ok maybe JR never got as good as he should have. ..... Robinson is the only player on the Spurs I actively dislike. 1st off it's a joke that he is considered one of the 50st greatest players. I have more post moves than that guy. Regardless of the limpness of his game, it's his 700 Club bible thumping ass that I despise.
We have the theater district, baseball stadium, basketball arena, tons of places to eat and stay, a couple of small parks, a new monorail coming up next year, all centalized...but all of it stinks because we are trying to fix the roads?
I've not much cared for the Spurs ever since the NBA and the sports press promoted David Robinson as the antidote to some non-existent disease thought to afflict the game. The adulation heaped on Robinson, over and above the quality of his game, was transparently a means of attacking players with lifestyles less admired by petty-bourgeois sportswriters. Every time I hear what a swell guy David Robinson is, I have to listen to Allen Iverson's rap CD (the uncensored version) to make the nausea go away. Liked 'em OK in the Gervin era, though.
Think about it, if all that construction is still up downtown next year while the Super Bowl is going on, Houston may never see a Super Bowl again. Believe me, I think it IS that big of a factor. Houston has the worst construction in the United States of America, which doesn't bode well considering we have the hordes of people coming from everywhere for the Super Bowl.
Houston is a gorgeous city, construction or not. Damn, the things Texans take for granted... And don't even start on the women. San Antonio: Houston: I rest my case.
heh heh, one jokey comment and I come back and see an I-10 interurban shouting match. Keep firing boys.
Better question : Why should you even tolerate anyone but the Rockets? I have nothing personal against most teams - but when it comes down to it, all those other teams have a primary goal that is the direct opposite of the Rockets goal, and anything those teams do to further that goal harms the Rockets in some way. Everything good for them, is bad for the Rockets. Every time they are happy, some of it has come or will later come at the expense of the Rocket's happiness. So screw em all, I say. Obviously, there are some teams I dislike more than others. But not much.
