If (and this is a BIG IF) Hakeem have an outstanding season this year and decides to play again in a year by year basis, would the Rockets be able to re-sign him for Bird's rights after they sign Shandon and Mo with their multi-year contracts?

Isn't that what Miami did to Tim Hardaway?

    I'm not a capologist, so I can't answer the question, but I do have a side-question:

If Hakeem does have a big year and wants to play another, what will we do? I mean, we can't NOT resign him, can we?

How could we afford Shandon, Mo, and another year of Hakeem?

    What would we do?

Even unsigned, Dream would count against the Rockets' salary cap and prevent the Rockets from making a significant offer to Taylor and redoing Anderson's contract.

When the Bulls kept resigning MJ to the huge contracts, they were unable to acquire any large contract free agents.

Miami did not have any significant free agent signings this past summer. E Jones was acquired in a sign-n-trade deal.

No Go, then. We can still afford Shandon and Mo, can't we - without putting Steve's next contract 'renegotiation' in danger? (that comes after this season, doesn't it?)

dcab...what? you don't believe Dream in the press conferences where he flat out laughs at playing another year.

come on...stop it. Dream is retiring.

    with that said,

We can renounce Hakeem, sign Mo and Anderson, then resign Hakeem for the Barkley-esque $1m exception.

now there some fuel to continue on with your silly dreamcasting. But, Dream is not in the cast next year.

Thanks HP - guess it is dreamcasting but I can't help it. With a healthy Dream in the line-up Rocks have a good chance at the championship.

Guess I am one of those fan that is not ready to let go of Dream yet.

    To clarify,

According to my calculations, if the Rockets do not make any significant personnel movements between now and next seson, we will have a total salary of approximately $35.6 Million, and the Salary Cap is predicted to be $43.0 Million.

The way it works, is that anyone who's contract expires at the end of this year, counts towards the salary cap until re-signed or renounced, but according to different rules.
Hakeem, being Larry Bird eligible would count 150% of previous salary, equal to approximately $24Mil. Of course this is ludicrous and will not happen.

There are a couple of possibilites with Anderson, outlined in the thread http://bbs.clutchcity.net/ubb/Forum3/HTML/008224.html
If he exercises HIS option on the final year of his deal, then he is a non factor and WILL count $2.4mil towrds the cap (which I included in the $35.5 amount. Personally, I think he will NOT exercise the option and sign a new Mid Level Exception for the NBA average salary of approximately $4.5mil, in which case our payrol will increase to $37.5mil.

Assuming Shandon stays in the fold, the Rockets would have to either renounce Hakeem and free up the cap space, or sign him to a smaller contract ($1mil is the minimum for a veteran of Olajuwon's experience). Any amount we signed Hakeem to would eat into the amount we could offer Mo Taylor to stay. If we were at $37.5 payroll and the cap was $43.0, the our cap space = $5.5mil.

    As such,

Amount offered to Mo Taylor = $5.5Mil subtract Hakeem's salary. Simple isn't it?
