At your job, when you have a doctor or dentist appointment, are you allowed to use sick time, or do you have to take personal time (or even vacation time)? How many sick/personal/vacation days do you get at your job?

It's turned into a -huge- deal here recently, and it seems to change constantly as to what we're allowed to do. I'm just curious about how it works at other institutions.

My apologies if this has been discussed before--I don't have the search function.

When I take off for a dentist or dr. appt, I make up the hours that week. I'll arrive to work early and not take a lunch then take off to the appointment. I don't take sick or vacation time. My employer is cool with it because they know I do my job.

My job is typically pretty lenient about that kind of stuff. As far as I know (as I haven't had any appointments since I started here), no one is really docked anything as long as you're there for at least 6 hours. Any less and I'm pretty sure it's half a sick day.

I work for the federal govt, and we get 13 sick days a year that carryover, so alot of old guys have like over 6 months of sick leave accumulated...

Sick and personal days are the same with my employer. I think I get 5 or 6 of those. If I was gone the whole day for a doctor's appointment, I'd burn one of those. Otherwise, I don't worry about going out for an hour or two.

We get one personal/sick day every quarter.. We get to use them however we want, we can even use them to extend a vacation if we want.. It's a great perk, but the downfall is we only get four all year and we can only hold eight total..

I get 7 weeks and 3 days of PTO (paid time off) per year. Sick or vacation - it doesn't matter - you use PTO. Of course that urges you to come in sick because who wants to burn a PTO day with a cold when you could save it for when you have something to do or somewhere to go.

For Dr appts I'll just go and not record the time off. I'll go through periods (like the last 2 months) where I'll work 60+ hours per week and sometimes weekends so taking back a few hours here or there for appts or errands is just something I do.
