Ok so they are ranked #5 in the bcs and Cal is #4. does that mean texas does not play in a bcs bowl? you have the Orange, Sugar, Rose, and Fiesta bowl. wouldnt that mean that the top 8 in the BCS rankings play in one of those BCS bowls? Im confused.
Utah, ranked 6th, gets an automatic bid over Texas because they are in a non-BCS conference and in the top 6. Texas needs Cal to play bad against Southern Miss next week to get in.
I think what screws it all up is the agreement that if a non-BCS school finishes in the top 6 in the BCS, they are awarded a BCS bowl also, the Big East, ACC, and Big 10 champs will take a BCS spots as well the top 6 BSC currently is 1. USC 2. OU 3. Auburn 4. Cal. 5. Texas 6. Utah Orange will be USC vs OU (if OU wins Big 12) Fiesta Sugar Rose so you basically have 7 teams for 6 spots with Texas on the outside looking in
Texas and Cal are so close that if 3 voters (AP or coaches) switch their rankings of Cal and Texas on the ballot, UT could leapfrog Cal in the BCS despite not leading in either the coaches or AP polls. (BTW, if last year's system was in place, UT would be in 4th easily). What a goofy, arbitrary way to decide anything. Give me a freaking playoff already.
They need to remove the conference champions from automatic bids. They could amend it to "no conference champion gets an automatic bid if it has 2 or maybe 3 loses." DD
As it stands today, this is what the BCS is projected to look like: Orange: USC - OU Sugar: Auburn - Miami/Va. Tech Rose: Michigan - Cal Fiesta: Utah - Pittsburgh About 10 people around the nation will watch the Fiesta Bowl this year. Here's some other probable bowl matchups. Capital One: LSU - Iowa Cotton: Texas - Tennessee Outback: Wisconsin - UGA Holiday: A&M - Ariz. St.
i believe i've heard this referred to as "the Notre Dame Rule." this was put in the BCS system so that ND would be guaranteed a spot if they landed anywhere in the top 6. obviously, they cannot win a conference... i'm pretty sure nobody ever thought teams like utah and boise state had a chance to get in there. just my .02. Texas is screwed AGAIN.
UT knows every year that if they don't beat OU, they're going to have a tough time getting into a BCS bowl. If Mack put as much energy into preparing his team for OU as he does whining about the BCS, maybe this wouldn't be a problem (that's probably a cliche heard on talk radio lately, but I haven't been listening). I don't know why UT fans are clamoring for a BCS appearance anyway - are you SURE you want that, given Mack's record against top 10 teams? I think the last time UT beat a top 10 team was when Major was the QB in '99 or something.
I believe Notre Dame has its own rule in place, guaranteeing it a BCS spot if it finishes top-10. Must be nice. They beat #10 ranked Kansas State last year. And #6 ranked K State in 2002. Nice dig, though.
the 6 BCS conference champs make it. 2 at large teams also make it. the top 2 teams play in the title game no matter what. if you are from a non-BCS conference like utah and are in the top 6 and there is an open spot after the 1st rule is used, you make it automatically. if you are from a BCS conference and in the top 4 and there is still a spot free after the top 6 rule is used, you automatically qualify, which is how Cal is in. notre dame makes it for being in the top 10. i'm not sure if it trumps the top 6 rule though. i think if two non-BCS schools are in the top 6 and ND is in the top 10, then they go into a pool to be selected from. ND does beat the top 4 rule though i believe. i wanna say if ND wins 9 games they are in, too, but they may have to win 9 AND be in the top 10. hopefully it's not OR but it wouldn't surprise me. so of course UT is sandwiched perfectly in between both automatics. and i think UT is behind on the ballot of 3 voters in freakin' Texas right now. someone said on some of the ballots utah is sandwiched b/t us and cal. i can see putting utah ahead of both of us or behind both of us, but in between us? that's beyond ridiculous. either you think their zero losses means something or you don't. given our strength of schedule we should be ahead of the other 1 loss team, Cal. it doesn't even take a hometown bias for these Texas voters to put us over Cal, just a scan of the facts. it really is amazing that it's down to 3 votes and they could be votes we're not getting from our own state. and Nebraska was #9 when we beat them last year.
