Where about to get a semi entertainment system (semi being not blown out or expensive but do-able).

    1) 1080p Upconverter DVD Player. What exactly does this upconverter mean?

    2) Wife wants a blu ray player so she suggested the PS3. Looking thru some accessories, I saw a cooling fan for it. Does this machine run heating problems (similar to Xbox?)?

    3) HDMI cables for PS3, does that bring the FULL potential of the blu ray out?

    4) NBA2k10, does it play the same, differently then on 360? (my 360 has 3 rings)

    5) The free internet on PS3, is that like the silver membership on the 360, or the gold?

    6) Since I am getting blu ray, what specs should I be looking for in a tv?

    7) Should I just get a regular blu ray player and convince the wife to let me get a new 360 (I do love my 360).

Any other suggestions you guys can think of?

    Thanks in advance!

It upconverts the video from the DVD to fit and look much better on the HD tv.

Yes, get HDMI cables. Buy them online. DO NOT buy them in stores like Bestbuy. They'll rip you off.

Heating problems with the PS3? Never heard of it. I have a PS3, never had ANY problems with it. I stream movies from my pc in another room in the house wireless onto my tv.

    1) It means that it isn't a blu-ray player but will upconvert standard DVD's to 1080p...basically it doesn't look as good as a bluray but it's ok

    2) no idea

    3) yes

    4) I don't play video games...no idea

    5) See #4

    6) If you go over 42 inches, you should get a 1080p television. If it is smaller than that 720p/1080i will work...you can't tell the difference.

    7) that depends on your budget

    Uprising answered it.

Not heating problems, per se, but it would help if you bought one, so you can keep it cool and help it with the processing. I have never had these problems, just like Uprising said.
We need pics of your wife or we won't believe she's real ;).

    3) HDMI cables for PS3, does that bring the FULL potential of the blu ray out?
    Yes.

    4) NBA2k10, does it play the same, differently then on 360? (my 360 has 3 rings)
    I've never played this.

    5) The free internet on PS3, is that like the silver membership on the 360, or the gold?
As long as you have broadband Internet access and a network cable, you do not need to pay anything through PlayStation Network. You can get a username online or when you plug up your PS3.

    6) Since I am getting blu ray, what specs should I be looking for in a tv?
The higher the Contrast Ratio, the better for great image. The higher the Mhz, the better for smooth transition from frame to frame on a Blu-ray and even on a regular up-converted DVD. There are many specs like types: Plasma vs. LCD vs. DLP vs. LED. Screen size is also something you can consider. Of course, the bigger the better that's what she said.

    7) Should I just get a regular blu ray player and convince the wife to let me get a new 360 (I do love my 360).
:( Why do you need "another" 360 if the one you have works well? The PS3 will allow you to play some games not available on the 360, and it will let you watch Blu-ray. Why not have both. Dude, I'd say you take the deal and RUN.

Yeah, if your wife suggests BETTER electronics, please don't argue. You're a lucky man, sir.

It stretches the picture to fit the 1920x1080 resolution of 1080p/i and probably enhances it a bit. It's nothing like true 1080p, so it's slightly above traditional DVD quality.

Nah, the PS3 doesn't need special cooling.

Yes, HDMI is required to use 1080p.

Not sure. I wasn't aware you had to pay to play the PS3 over the internet so long as you have your own connection... could be wrong, though.

You'll want a 1080p TV. Whether you decide to go with LED, LCD, Plasma, etc. is up to you and your budget. Of three above, ordering by quality (best first): Plasma, LED, LCD. That's also the order of price, unfortunately.

You might as well get a PS3 if you're getting Blu-Ray. It's barely more expensive than a standalone player, especially now with the price cut to it.

You don't need an upconverter DVD player if you get the PS3.

Yes, use only HDMI. Go get your cables from Fry's, or online. Do not buy them from Walmart or Best Buy or places like that, you will pay 5 times too much.

The online capabilities of the PS3 are not broken into tiers like XBox Live is. It just has it, no kind of fee like the $50 annually for XBL. Of course, XBL is about 20 times better than anything on the PS3, but that's neither here nor there. And don't worry about cooling the PS3. Not an issue, just keep it well ventilated.

I would suggest a nice 1080p Plasma, Samsung preferably, and around 55" or bigger. You will be happy, it will be bliss. Trust me on this.

No, get the PS3 and a new 360 as well. This is the path to true happiness. And stick a Wii in there somewhere as well, so she can stand on that little white thing and think she is having fun too.

ps - should I tell y'all that I got my 63" Samsung Plasma, and that it is the most beautiful piece of electronic eye-candy I have ever seen?

you could probably get Microsoft to fix your Xbox. (how old is it?)

you don't need a separate DVD player if you get a PS3 or a bluray player.

If you do get a non-PS3 bluray player, I suggest Panasonic.

For the TV, read the reviews:

if you are on budget, you should get a 50inch 720p plasma. They are dirt cheap, $700, you/wife can hardly tell the difference if you sit 10feet away.

if you want the best bang for the buck, you should get 1080p plasma by Samsung

if you want the best value for LCD go for V series from Sony they have the better 120hz and good black levels

if you want top of the line stuff, go for the LED TVs (They are really LCDs with LEDs for lighting), Samsung or Sony

I bought my 32" Samsung 1080p television some months ago and I did not regret the purchase. The picture quality in standard definition in which my local cable company only provides is superb and it is even more pleasurable when I watch movies in my blu ray player. I was torn between Sony and Samsung initially but in the end, I settled for the latter because of its quality and price. And I'm glad when I checked out the LCD TV ratings of various brands because it assured me to get the best value for my purchase.

Unfortunately, this was a replacement (free) for my initial 360 which had 4 rings when the whole 360 was still new. So it was already refurbished.

Being already refurbish it was already registered so that machine already got its trade in (form my understanding at least).
